Yes, Heinlein explicitly self-identified as a libertarian. In a Nov. 1, 1967 letter to Judith Merril (marked "never sent" but preserved in his papers), he wrote: “As for libertarian, I’ve been one all my life, a radical one. You might use the term ‘philosophical anarchist’ or ‘autarchist’ about me, but ‘libertarian’ is easier to define and fits well enough.” In his 1975 interview with J. Neil Schulman, he aligned his politics with minimal government (like Ayn Rand’s): limited to police, courts, and defense, with everything else handled privately. He critiqued overreach: “I’m sick of the way the government sticks its nose into everything.”

Robert A. Heinlein was more than an author; he was an aeronautical engineer, naval officer, and libertarian. He was among the first to emphasize scientific accuracy in his fiction and was often called a pioneer of the hard science subgenre. #Heinlein #KylePratt

Hey @grok can you find quotations where Robert A. Heinlein called himself a libertarian, or indicated he was a libertarian? I think he said something about it in a letter to Judith Merrill. Maybe in his interview with J. Neil Schulman. Could you check for those as well? Any direct quotations from the man would be best.

Star Trek exists in more than one world. It exists in the fantasy of science fiction - weird and wonderful things that play unimaginable possibilities of exploration and human endeavor. But it also exists in the fantasy of human beings, the perfection of human beings, the exploration that human beings have made since the dawn of time and the continuing exploration - physically mentally and morally. It’s that aspect of Star Trek that I’ve always loved, to look at something physically that doesn’t exist now by these talented writers & designers but also to tackle the eternal human questions the agonies, the ecstasies. Star Trek should exist for a long time to come based on those truths. I for one would love to see its continuity. It’s with sorrow that I hear about the cancellation of the new Star Trek series.

Industrial Light & Magic
50 years ago on March 22, 1976, Star Wars began filming in Tunisia. Among the shots captured were the first attempts at Luke Skywalker's view of the iconic twin sunset. Although that first day's sunset shots were not ultimately used, they marked the first live action plate photography ever captured for Industrial Light & Magic, who would be tasked with adding the suns to the background. ILM was less than a year old that spring of '76, and were busily preparing their visual effects pipeline at their Van Nuys, California studio. Read more here: starwars.com/news/star-wars…

Skywalker Sound
Skywalker Sound@skywalkersound·
While Star Wars: A New Hope began shooting 50 years ago today on March 22, 1976, sound designer Ben Burtt had already been hard at work on the film for many months. He was busy recording animals, machinery, vehicles, and all manner of distinct objects in his efforts to build a vast library with which he would design original sounds. That included the voices of droids and Jawas, which were among the characters shot on that first day of production in the deserts of Tunisia.  Read more here: starwars.com/news/star-wars…
