Carl Yastrzemski (Yaz) was my absolute favorite player growing up. As a kid, I idolized the guy. The Hall of Famer who spent his entire 23-year career with the Boston Red Sox, won the Triple Crown and MVP in that legendary 1967 "Impossible Dream" season, racked up 3,000+ hits, and patrolled left field at Fenway like no one else.
But what I really loved me was his batting stance. That high-held bat, cocked back and ready, the intense focus, he looked like he was about to unleash on every pitch. I'd grab my bat in the backyard, plant my feet just like him, tuck my chin into my shoulder, and try to mimic every detail. I spent hours stepping into that stance, wiggling the bat high, waiting for the imaginary fastball. Felt like I was channeling the legend himself.
Yaz wasn't just a player; he was the reason I fell in love with baseball. Still gives me chills thinking about it. Who's your childhood baseball hero?
