I can be found at @parrotttom.bsky.social on Blue Sky, and my current plan is to migrate there completely at some point in the near future (likely once I feel like enough people have been able to that I'm not abandoning folks who have no choice).

So, a new campaign of D&D has started and my warforged monk is out in the wild with their new group and is unsure how to navigate human emotions. 😁 I love new adventures! 🎲 And my new dice!

@otherhappyplace I have a 19 year old coworker who told me her doctor was 'a prune' and I was like 'i am sorry but I cannot trust your gauging of anyone's age because you are very very young'

Alright, y'all, I think I'm done with Twitter. It's been real, it's been fun, but at times it hasn't been real fun. You can catch me at Bsky if you wish to catch me. I'll leave this up for like a day or two before I actually close out my account so peeps can see it. 🫡

@Roxyarnie1 No joke, I started to call it 'that white and blue website' and then I remembered that's what some people call OnlyFans, and I was like... you now, I'll reword this before people think I'm making a career change

@riseupcomus Between them and the Cauldron Born and the... gwythaints? I might be getting that one wrong, anyway, Arawn wasn't lacking for quality minions.

In the book The Black Cauldron, there is a great class of monster called the Huntsmen of Annuvin. When one died, his power flowed into the rest of them. The fewer there were, the harder they were to kill. Very gameable enemy.

The great difficulty of cosmic horror is, how do you really capture the unknowable? How can something written by a human really portray something that exists outside of all human experience?

@ParrottTom can’t pay rent and the world is on fire, cosmic horror just kind of rings hollow, I think. Some people will STILL enjoy it, especially if you can tie it to a tangible fear the way some of the originators tied it to racism. But the audience is smaller. (2/2)

@ParrottTom Fair. But I think cosmic horror is a derivation of horror that doesn’t really work in the current market. Not just because the industry isn’t pushing it—I think it’s out of touch with popular culture for a number of reasons.

@ParrottTom I recently completed a short story that tries to nail this vibe, and my answer basically was “explain only what the characters could possibly know and nothing else”. Leaves plenty of mystery because so much is simply unknown, but (hopefully) doesn’t feel corny.

@Jcstearnswriter I agree with you in a sense, I think that can work very well. The issue, of course, is that the modern market is very about drilling down, always drilling down, more details, expand on everything, franchise everything.

@ParrottTom I think the sweet spot is implying a great deal of additional context unseen by the audience; as though this horrific thing is VASTLY more complicated than the small facet of it that you’re seeing. (The FIRST Hellraiser is a phenomenal example.)

@VoiceOfKosh There is definitely a big push towards not only all answers all the time, but all answers are true and authoritative. Characters are never themselves ignorant or misinformed, oh no.
