The Chronicle of Philanthropy
The Chronicle of Philanthropy@Philanthropy·
A highlight at the Chronicle this week: Melanie Lundquist, one of the nation’s most prolific donors, stopped by our offices for a conversation with our staff. Lundquist, who has appeared on our Philanthropy 50 (#PHIL50) ranking of most-generous donors and a Giving Pledger, offered thoughts on what’s important for us to cover – and where she sees room for improvement in philanthropy. One area where Melanie especially wants to see philanthropic action: protecting democracy. During our discussion, Lundquist pulled out a print copy of our 2019 issue with this cover story: Can Philanthropy Save Democracy?, an issue she keeps with her to show others. She also pulled out of her briefcase our latest print issue and pointed to how our piece on Jim Barksdale’s “Mississippi Miracle” will help her in her work as a founding donor and vice board chair of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools. Do you have a Chronicle of Philanthropy story or webinar that you recommend to colleagues? Tell us about it in the comments! Want to read the Can Philanthropy Democracy? story? 📚 ✨A New Year. A Bold Promise. ✨ Today, we welcome our students not just into classrooms, but into a promise—of safety, learning, and endless possibility. We begin the year with record academic gains, expanded opportunities, and a shared commitment to every child. Yes, challenges remain—but united in purpose and compassion, there is nothing we cannot overcome. Let’s advocate for equity in K-12 schools! ACA 7 looks to remove parts of Prop 209, possibly supporting programs like the Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) and increasing the hiring of teachers of color. #PartnershipLA #AdvocacyDays2025

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Congressman Sylvester Turner. With his passing, we have lost a true friend, a passionate advocate for children and a staunch believer in the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools.” Melanie Lundquist 📷: Meeting in Houston, 2019

Dr. Maya Angelou was a poet, storyteller, and activist whose words continue to uplift and inspire generations. Through her powerful writings and fearless advocacy, she gave voice to the struggles and triumphs of Black history, resilience, and hope. From I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings to Still I Rise, her work reminds us of the strength found in overcoming adversity. As she once said, 'People will forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel.' Her legacy of wisdom, courage, and truth lives on. #MayaAngelou #StillIRise #LegacyOfWords
