At the height of the Summer of Love, "The Saturday Evening Post" sent Joan Didion to San Francisco to assess the hippie scene in the Haight-Ashbury.
On her trip, Didion spoke to the Grateful Dead – a conversation which eventually made its way into a brief section of her landmark essay "Slouching Towards Bethlehem."
The full three-page reported essay about Didion's afternoon with The Dead had never seen the light of day – until now.
Thanks to the opening of the Didion archives, this is the never-before-published chronicle of the time that Joan met Jerry.
