Part of my Birmingham Mail @birmingham_live column- remember no rights or wrongs only opinions Like many supporters, I suspect, I often moan about how long it takes to get to and away from local games due to traffic delays and continual roadworks. Well, I will moan no more, well I probably will, however what I am getting at is that other supporters face longer more gruelling and expensive trips to get to games to support their club. Last Sunday I was in Bolton as a guest of the Blues Lancashire Official Supporters club along with some members of the official Blues Merseyside OSC. It was a long arduous trip with rain and stop start traffic and I was not best pleased I was with former striker Cameron Jerome who travelled from Manchester. It was a brilliant night with Cameron and I chatting about his career etc and that was followed by a Q & A with the supporters. We were made so welcome with so much love for the club, and I am sure most were wearing replica Blues shirts from many eras. tea and Pizza on tap. However, while chatting to the supporters, it struck me that such is their love for the club, these fans travel down to St Andrews every single home game and to plenty of away games either driving or using public transport covering many hundreds of miles every weekend at great personal cost. Now that is loyalty and not a single moan about the traffic jams, roadworks or how long it takes to travel and what time they get home. Every game for these supporters is an away game in terms of travel. However, unlike me, none moaned about the travelling or cost. They are buzzing and so excited about what is happening at their cub under ownership of Tom Wagmer and leadership of CEO Jeremy Dale. To see the club on the rise makes them proud and happy and with a sense of optimistic anticipation for the future. As one said to me “sod the drive, the expense or how late I get home I am loving every game and every trip” he made the point of how proud he was to wear his replica shirt and scarf. It is hard for supporters of other clubs to understand how it feels to see your club on the rise after too many years of decay under previous owners on and off the pitch. Blues fans had been through a long miserable 13-year period where pride in the club and hope had all but disappeared. So now they are buzzing and full of genuine optimism like of which I have not seen for a very long time. I regularly meet supporters club groups before the games at St Andrews and catch up with those from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scandinavia and all parts of Britain. At the home game with Leicester, I met up with a wonderful group of fans from the Sydney & New South Wales OSC in Australia who had travelled from down-under to see three home games, Leicester, West Brom and Leeds United before travelling back to Perth. Absolutely amazing to see such dedication. Proving that wherever you are, wherever you live, be it Solihull or Sydney you are a supporter from the cradle to the grave. I know that it’s not only Blues supporters who travel long distances, but all our local clubs have supporters who admirably travel great distances to support their team in all weathers. Thanks to Lancashire OSC’s event organiser Andy Hasty and the OSC leader John Griffin and everyone who joined us at the event in Bolton, for making myself and Cameron so welcome. Massive respect to all supporters who travel to games week in and week out to cheers their club on in all weathers both locally and from all over the country, you are the lifeblood of your club and the game.

On this day, 47 years ago, Bob Latchford scored twice against Chelsea to reach the 30 league goal mark and claim the Daily Express prize of £5,000. Here he is with the Adidas golden boot, cheque and prolific young striker Timothy Chadwick.

So sad to hear of the passing of Paddy Barclay. Paddy was knowledgable, always great company and to use an in-word, humble, always finding time to help and talk to anyone. Thoughts to his family and many friends. RIP my friend
