[WATCH] I asked Roelf Meyer on #FaceTheNation a few months ago if he would agree to be our ambassador to the US, his response was “I don’t think somebody of my age should take on that responsibility at this stage. It’s demanding. It demands youthful energy” . WATCH here

As the guy in this video - I want to clear something up. I was standing far back and not in close proximity to Geordin. He did not skip me I was not in close range for him to shake my hand. There is no crisis here. Let’s move on.

South Africa 🇿🇦 played a key supporting role in NASA’s Artemis II mission.
The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) provided spacecraft tracking, telemetry, and data through its Hartebeesthoek ground station in Gauteng.
This helped NASA monitor the Orion spacecraft during its lunar flyby, the first crewed mission beyond low Earth orbit since the Apollo era.
Engineers captured precise orbital data when the spacecraft was visible from the southern hemisphere.

When other stations were out of range, SA kept the Artemis II astronauts talking to Mission Control.
SA National Space Agency (SANSA) played a critical role in NASA’s Artemis II mission!
Our Hartebeesthoek Ground Station provided vital tracking and telemetry as the Orion spacecraft looped the Moon—keeping humanity’s first lunar crew in over 50 years connected to Earth.
Our specialized antennas and "hydrogen maser" atomic clocks, provided the extreme accuracy needed for Doppler measurements.

🌌 Did you know a tiny Karoo town is basically the Silicon Valley of Space?
Sutherland, Northern Cape hosts 20+ telescopes for 8 nations — and they're all paying South Africa for the privilege of our skies.
🇿🇦 South Africa — 6+ telescopes
🇺🇸 USA — 5 telescopes
🇯🇵 Japan — 2 telescopes
🇩🇪 Germany — 2 telescopes
🇵🇱 Poland — 2 telescopes
🇬🇧 UK — 2 telescopes
🇰🇷 South Korea — 1 telescope
🇷🇺 Russia — 1 telescope
Why Sutherland? The AGA Act. 🏛️
SA law protects 75km of radio silence & dark skies around the site. When driving, the headlights arent allowed.
We didn't just build a world-class observatory. We legislated it into existence. 🤫✨
The threads below break down each country — what they brought, & what they're hunting for in our skies. 👇
