@thekissarmyman It turned out to be a much sunnier trip than I expected. My friend who passed on did not want sadness to overshadow her life. And so, many of us were brought together by her memory and old friends reconnected. I know she smiled at that.

@Ari_gaGotoku Temple of Doom is a lot of fun! And the graphics are awesome for their era. Of that list, the ones I most recommend checking out are Gauntlet, Rampage, Narc, Super Pac-man, and Indiana Jones.  Those ones are pure fun. And the “Journey” game is so weird that it’s great!

@Ari_gaGotoku For me, it was NES and gameboy. The arcades were kind of almost more about hanging out with friends than they were about the games. But playing NES was purely for the love of the game!

@d4doome I am of the same mind on these points. I find both Valley of the Dolls and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls to be masterful and fascinating films of their era.

@PatVeil I also intensely dislike the term “guilty pleasure.” My theory on VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is that far from being a misfire it turned out exactly how Mark Robson wanted. Robson was no hack. This is the guy who directed ISLE OF THE DEAD and THE 7th VICTIM. He was a fine director and

I really dislike the term "camp" so much. I don't consider VALLEY OF THE DOLLS to be camp. It's pure unadulterated melodrama but most critics do not understand the conventions of that genre. It's amusing that many critics dote on movies like Douglas Sirk's WRITTEN ON THE WIND but

STRANGE TALES: Henry Darger (1892-1973) was an American outsider artist and writer who lived a quiet, reclusive life as a hospital janitor and dishwasher in Chicago. He worked menial jobs for decades while secretly creating an enormous body of work in his small apartment. His output was only discovered in 1972, shortly before his death, when landlords cleared out his rooms. Over roughly 50-60 years, he produced a 15,000-page illustrated fantasy novel titled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion (commonly shortened to In the Realms of the Unreal. It tells an epic tale of seven young heroines, the Vivian Girls, leading a rebellion against evil adult forces (the Glandelinians) who enslave and torment children. He accompanied the text with hundreds of large, double-sided watercolor and collage illustrations, many panoramic and over 9 feet long, created using traced images from magazines, comics, and newspapers. His art mixes childlike innocence with dark, violent themes of war, torture, and rescue, often featuring the Vivian Girls (who sometimes appear with male anatomy in the drawings). It is now considered a landmark of outsider art and is held in major museum collections. This book collects a large sample of that work in a museum quality portfolio.
