Metrolinx has grown into an increasingly inefficient organization, now employing a staggering 4,957 full-time staff. This raises legitimate questions about operational focus and productivity, especially given the agency’s continued inability to deliver on critical projects. A prime example is the 19-kilometer LRT system, which remains incomplete nearly two years after reaching 98% completion. Under the leadership of CEO Phil Verster, who has received significant salary increases despite poor performance, regional transit expansion—a critical priority for decades—has effectively stalled. This is particularly troubling given the region’s long-standing need for modern, efficient transit infrastructure to support its growth. To address these systemic challenges, Metrolinx must prioritize efficiency, enforce clear accountability, and implement streamlined systems and processes. Comprehensive restructuring is essential to ensure that all projects are managed with the precision, urgency, and transparency they demand. The scale of the impact of these inefficiencies on the region’s future is hard to fully quantify. Delayed transit projects hinder economic growth, erode public confidence in the agency, and jeopardize the perception of transit as a viable and reliable transportation option in the region. A decisive shift toward focused, accountable leadership is urgently needed for Metrolinx to fulfill its mandate and effectively serve the growing needs of the region. It is imperative that this transformation happens without delay.
