The German Reichstag burns after the German surrender on May 1st 1945. The Reichstag was the last defended building in Berlin by a desperate, trapped garrison of approximately 300 German soldiers against overwhelming Soviet forces.

@oostfronter Registratie van zijn dood werd pa in december 1946 voltooid - akte vermeldt dat de 29-jarige slager Willem Hermanus Joolen, geboren op 23 oktober 1914 te Utrecht en echtgenoot van Geurtje van Beek, op 28 juli 1944 is overleden bij Lagna Siedlung, 12 kilometer westelijk van Narwa.

Deze foto, gemaakt door SS-oorlogsverslaggever Dirk Willem Brantsen tijdens de Slag om de Volchov (1941-1942), toont de trotse legionair Willem Joolen met het IJzeren Kruis 2e en 1e Klasse. Een echte Nederlandse held. Als één van de eerste Nederlanders van het Vrijwilligerslegioen Nederland ontving hij het EK1. Later diende hij in het Nederlandse Oostfrontregiment "General Seyffardt". Tijdens de voor dit regiment fataal afgelopen terugtocht uit Narva werd hij op 26 juli 1944 in Estland als vermist opgegeven. Volgens een ooggetuige zou Joolen na ingesloten te zijn geraakt de laatste kogel voor zichzelf hebben bewaard, na eerst meer dan een handvol Russen gedood te hebben. Willem Joolen werd 29 jaar. Een ware Nederlandse patriot. Zijn kameraden plaatsten na zijn vermissing een ode aan Joolen in de krant, waarin ze zijn kracht en dapperheid roemden. Zijn leus was -volgens zijn makkers- "Met Mussert door de hel, voor Dietsland!"

@oostfronter In 1947 ontsnapte hij uit kamp Duindorp en vluchtte naar Duitsland. Net als veel andere buitenlandse SS-vrijwilligers met het Ridderkruis, kreeg hij door een speciale Duitse wetgeving automatisch het Duitse staatsburgerschap. Hij overleed in 1986 in Gerolstein

Derk Elsko Bruins uit Vlagtwedde ontving het Ridderkruis van Felix Steiner, nadat hij in 1944 bij Narwa 12 Sovjet-tanks uitschakelde. Bruins behoorde tot de eerste lichting Nederlandse vrijwilligers, overleefde de oorlog en ondersteunde z'n hele leven lang invalide kameraden.

@MarseilleH41515 Karl Thurmann is linked to Das Boot through the author of the book, Lothar-Günther Buchheim. He knew Thurmann personally and even created a charcoal sketch of him.When Buchheim wrote his world-famous novel Das Boot in 1973, he modeled a specific character directly after Thurmann.

General Karl-Wilhelm von Schlieben, commander of the German garrison at Cherbourg, shortly after his surrender on June 26, 1944 to the Americans. In his pocket was found a menu from a dinner honoring him a few weeks earlier, featuring lobster and champagne. He died in 1964 at the age of 69.
