The Irish Politics Newsletter
For every person who voted for Sinn Féin in Galway West, three people voted for Fine Gael. So it's either the party leader or the party message.
The Week in Politics@rtetwip

Áine Lawlor asks Sinn Féin TD, @loreillysf, "Is angry Sinn Féin a mistake?" after Janice Boylan's loss to Daniel Ennis, in the bye-elections for Dublin-Central. You can catch the re-run of #RTÉTwip on RTÉ One at 00:20am and on the RTÉ News Channel 3pm, 18:30pm and 10pm.

Quite something that Fine Gael, in government since 2011 & not doing too well in opinion polls, have won the bye-election in Galway West. It shows the importance of a candidate with local name recognition and a track record in politics. The transfers from Helen Ogbu put Seán Kyne ahead of Independent Ireland’s Noel Thomas on the last count. rte.ie/news/2026/0524…

The biggest problem for @sinnfeinireland is that a majority of voters simply dont care about their 2 core issues, namely Palestine and a United Ireland. #dubc #election

It's incredible that FG won a by-election with the help of Labour, an 'opposition party'. Commiserations to II. It was a powerful vote.

Interesting to watch Verona Murphy previously in the Dáil Chamber threatening the Ceann Comhairle before she took over the job after the Lowry Grubby Deal. Now she treats the opposition like school children, roaring & shouting and them and switching off their microphones.

Did a very rough projection of the North Inner City based on the constituency-level swing from the 2024 general election. Hutch: 24% (16% in 2024) Sinn Féin: 22% (25% in 2024) Social Democrats: 18% (13% in 2024) Steenson: 11% (8% in 2024) Fine Gael: 9% (12% in 2024)

Taioseach getting very tetchy on the housing crisis. He says the opposition is always cribbing, states we were only building 20,000 in 2020 now it’s over 33,000. Why is he not challenged on the fact it was him, his party Fianna Fáil who are center in creating this catastrophe.

PAC queries RTÉ’s use of taxpayer money after it sent 41 staff to Czechia for World Cup semi-final The government decided in 2024 that RTÉ will get a guaranteed €725m in public funding up to 2027 after a lapse in TV licence revenues due to the payments scandal at the broadcaster in 2023. Sinn Féin member of the PAC @cllrcathyb said at the committee hearing “I would like to write to RTE and ask did this actually happen? I'd be very concerned if it did happen.” #PAC #RTÉ #HowIrelandWorks independent.ie/irish-news/pol…
