As part of its genocidal campaign in Gaza, Israel has so far killed 20,000 Palestinian children and damaged or destroyed 85%+ of schools. UN experts have called it ‘scholasticide’. Thank you to teachers’ union @NASUWT_NI for the opportunity for Amnesty's @PatrickCorrigan to speak about human rights in Palestine and the Middle East at their annual conference today. This afternoon NASUWT NI voted to join the #apartheid free zone campaign. Images: @photolinepic

A clerical child abuse inquiry for Northern Ireland is long overdue. This week, Amnesty International's Patrick Corrigan joined victim/survivors Nikella Holmes and @TonyGribben3 to give evidence to the Executive Office committee at the NI Assembly. Generations of children have suffered sexual and other abuse in faith-based settings. Amnesty International has been supporting victims' calls for accountability and action for the last sixteen years. The First Minister and deputy First Minister have had a comprehensive research report - with clear recommendations for a public inquiry and a raft of safeguarding measures - since summer 2025. But still no decision and no engagement with victims. Meanwhile, new stories of catastrophic abuse within churches and church-linked schools emerge on a regular basis. The best time for action would have been 16 years ago. The second best time is now.

What do women’s lives look like under genocide? A new B’Tselem report presents data and testimonies from women in Gaza, revealing a brutal, ongoing struggle for survival. Today, Sunday, 8 March, International Women’s Day, listen to the voices of women in Gaza, bearing witness from a continuous hell: Since October 2023, Israel has killed more than 12,500 women in Gaza, including over 9,000 mothers, leaving 21,193 widows. Life in tents has morphed from a temporary solution into a permanent state – thin fabric walls that offer no protection or privacy. Without a room of their own, women sleep fully clothed and with their head coverings on, even in extreme heat. The simplest everyday tasks, such as washing, changing clothes, breastfeeding, or managing menstruation (now without hygiene products) have become degrading, near-impossible undertakings in exposed public spaces. The burden on Gaza’s women is beyond comprehension. As Ikhlas al-Kafarneh told us in her testimony: “I can’t even cry in front of my children, because then I’d fall apart. I so much want to be alone, even for one day, to be just with myself in a distant place where I can scream at the top of my lungs and cry over this terrible life that has been forced on me.” Even after the so-called ceasefire of October 2025, the genocide still goes on. The killing continues, and the inhuman living conditions erase the privacy, health, and basic dignity of every woman and girl in Gaza. New Police Ombudsman report makes for shocking reading. A 14-year-old girl was among the 36 victims of predatory behaviour by male PSNI officers - many identified as 'sharks' - accused of abuse of position for sexual purposes. More accountability needed, including prosecutions.

So sorry to read this news of the death of photojournalist Paul Conroy, one of the bravest people I have ever known; badly injured in the attack by which killed Marie Colvin in Syria, he went on to report from Ukraine. He gave the @AmnestyNI Lecture in 2014 @BelfastFestival.

Heartbroken to share that my dear friend Paul Conroy (@reflextv) has passed away from a heart attack. He faced his final moments with courage and dignity. A selfless and fearless soul — you will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Paul.

Amnesty: The escalation in hostilities across the Middle East and North Africa region following the US and Israel attacks on Iran, and Iran’s retaliation, is putting civilians at grave risk. Amnesty urges all parties to abide by international humanitarian and human rights law.
