I have a confession. I loved the UK. I’ve read every James Bond novel. Watched every film twice. I love their naval history, their deadpan humor, their novelists. I kissed the ground too. And my dad, a fireman in the Bronx, hosted exchange fireman from Sheffield who filled our house with laughter and camaraderie that overshadowed the complaints from Irish Catholics at our church. 49 years of genuine love and respect. Not performance. Not anglophilia. Real. So it genuinely pains me to say this: I am struggling, right now, today, to give a single shit about them. I spent a week there this summer with my daughter trying to rekindle that appreciation in me. Mostly failed. UK friends, I’m not being rhetorical. I’m asking sincerely. Give me one reason. Not 1944. Not the Special Relationship as a concept. A reason for today. Give me one half a sh!t reason. Because I’m looking and I’m coming up with nothing.
