Today in the @EP_Justice @FabriceLeggeri questioned the Irish minister about the removal of Hungary’s President of the Republic and the use of retroactive legislation. The minister’s absurd response was that the rule of law in Hungary has improved significantly since the change of government. This, while Hungary is undergoing an unprecedented dismantling of its democratic constitutional order: the 17th Amendment to the Fundamental Law removes the President of the Republic from office, forces Constitutional Court judges out of office, and excludes a large part of the parliamentary opposition from democratic competition through retroactive legislation. Once again, this exposes Brussels’ hypocrisy and the double standards it applies when it comes to the rule of law.

That silence exposes the EU's double standards.

🇮🇹 | A 55-year-old man was seriously injured after being stabbed around 20 times outside a café in Milan while having breakfast with his elderly father. Now, as the new government seeks to restrict the right to stand for election through retroactive legislation and remove the President of the Republic and Constitutional Court judges as part of a constitutional coup, there is complete silence. 🔴 En Hungría, ante el silencio cómplice de Bruselas y la autocensura más brutal de todos los medios de comunicación, se está dando Péter Magyar, miembro del Partido popular europeo un auténtico asalto institucional sin parangón en las modernas “democracias” europeas. Hoy he intervenido en la apertura de la sesión plenaria para alzar la voz por el respeto a los más elementales principios del derecho justo: se aplican leyes ad hominem (contra Orbán, como aquí sánchez con su amnistía), leyes de eficacia retroactiva, toda una ley habilitante. Como Metsola me ha cortado, pongo toda la intervención: “De acuerdo con el artículo 167.1 del Reglamento, que habilita a esta cámara a debatir sobre asuntos del interés de la Unión, para denunciar lo que está sucediendo en Hungría ante el silencio vergonzante de las instituciones. Desde que Magyar ganó, ha puesto en marcha un plan de asalto de las instituciones de Hungría y su democracia. Durante 7 años hemos aguantado todas las semanas debates fabricados por la máquina de bulos de Soros o de Bruselas. Pero ahora esta cámara guarda silencio. Parece que la democracia húngara ya no es del interés de la Unión.
