Yet another fake quote from @syd_bee3! The "quote" she attributes to St. John Damascus [sic] below is made up by AI. It's not real, and it's slanderous to put Pelagianism in the mouth of a great saint.

@BioticCommando2 To be fair, she has many MALE forebears in the art of using AI quotes: her fellow modernists—ones who deny the atonement and the like.

@OrthoAugustine Sure but with this one we don't even have original Greek, just the isolated Latin quote. So there's no need to go around giving Chrysostom-level authority to an easily misunderstood quote.

Source: this is a quote attributed to St. John Chrysostom but it actually is from pseudo-Chrysostom, and is found in Thomas Aquinas's "Catena Aurea," in the section on Matthew 6:10 (and the English translation below comes from an English translation of the Catena Aurea).

Horribly out of context. Source: "On the Path to the Soul's Salvation & God's Kingdom," but it continues, "…and not where you left Him, but everywhere—on all paths, at all the world's crossroads. It's easier to run past the moon than past God, easier to escape the air than God."

Okay hive mind, I'm working on something on St John the Wonderworker for his feast day and I am trying to find an exact citation for this famous quote: "Never let anyone tell you that, in order to be Orthodox, you must be Eastern. The West was fully Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable liturgy is far older than any of her heresies." I am not looking for the usual quotes that just get passed around (usually in the context of WRO debates) but rather the full context of this quote, as in the letter or address in which he said it, either a primary source or the original person who heard him say it and related it second-hand. Looking for a primary source that I can cite. I've been trying to find where the quote originated because I can't find it in any of his primary writings or those of his spiritual children. Thanks!

@orthodadof7 It doesn't really matter cuz that would just depend on who had what manuscripts. Unless actual malice can be proven, it's all incidental.

@orthodadof7 Eh everyone did. They had bunches of manuscripts and stuff with whatever attributions ended up atgached. They can't be blamed for not ctrl+f searching through online databases for everything.

St. Gregory's Latin: Justi vero in tormentis semper intuentur injustos, ut hinc eorum gaudium crescat, quia malum conspiciunt quod misericorditer evaserunt; tantoque majores ereptori suo gratias referunt, quanto vident in aliis quod ipsi perpeti, si essent relicti, potuerunt.
