The Battle of Salamis was the first major naval battle recorded in history... Battle of Salamis, (480 BC), Greek Greco-Persian Wars, in which the Greek navy defeated much larger Persian naval forces in the straits at Salamis, between the island of Salamis and the Athenian port city of Piraeus. Persian king Xerxes and his army in 480 BC. He captured most of Greece and navy consisting of approximately 800 galleys. He stopped a small Greek fleet of 370 triremes in the Saronic Gulf. After this, the Greek commander Themistocles withdrew the Persian fleet to the narrow waters of the strait at Salamis, where the Persian ships had difficulty in maneuvering collectively. Greek triremes attacked heavily. He hit and sank many Persian ships. While the Greeks sank nearly 300 Persian ships, they themselves lost only about 40 ships. The remainder of the Persian fleet was dispersed, and as a result Xerxes was forced to postpone his planned land assaults for a year, giving the Greek city-states time to unite against him. #archaeohistories
