Reserved Camping consists of a maximum of one (1) sleeping unit and one (1) vehicle per site within your space, and a maximum of six (6) people per vehicle. Paul Newman was born on this day in 1925. Like many in his generation he volunteered to serve in World War II. He was disqualified from pilot training for color blindness and instead became a gunner on a Grumman Avenger. In one of those rare twists of fate his pilot came down with an ear infection just prior to flying to the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill off Okinawa in May of 1945 with the rest of the squadron. On May 11th the carrier was hit by two kamikazes. My grandfather was on the carrier that day. Having just returned from a mission he was killed in the ready room which was destroyed in what was a direct hit. That experience with fate stayed with Newman for the remainder of his days. In 1982 he founded @NewmansOwn with his friend A.E. Hotchner with 100% of the profits going to charity. A.E. Hotchner also gave Ernest Hemingway the typewriter on which he wrote A MOVEABLE FEAST, a typewriter that was so generously gifted to me in 2020. Newman’s mission to give back and make the world a better place through @NewmansOwnFdn continues today with over $600 million donated to charity to date. What’s your favorite Paul Newman movie?
I was holding a bottle of Paul Newman salad dressing when my niece asked me who Paul Newman was. I told her he was an actor, basically the Brad Pitt of my mom’s generation. Then she hit me with, “Who’s Brad Pitt?” If anyone needs me, I’ll be at the senior center eating applesauce.
