@PaulParrigon@nut_history "You can flip your bat. We had guys do that ... and the next time up there was chin music. And if you want to play that way, that's fine. Bring back the excitement? OK, we'll bring back the brushback pitch, the knockdown pitch. That's all part of the excitement." - Johnny Bench
@Tinsley_All@nut_history “I have never used steroids. Period.”—
Also Rafael Palmeiro lying under oath to congress in 2005. I understand you don’t like bat flips, I get it.
@PaulParrigon@nut_history That stuff doesn't bother me. Players jabbed at each other a lot. No need to send players to Charm School.
This:
“You don’t need to bring the attention to yourself because you think you did something that’s so incredible. 10,000 other players before you did it.” Rafael Palmeiro
@Tinsley_All@nut_history The Bash Brothers in 80s Oakland, late 70s Pirates were a constant show, read about Dizzy Dean and what he said on the field. Just Ty Cobb being Ty Cobb. So many examples
@Tinsley_All@nut_history They may not of flipped bats, but athletes and players from all eras of sports had their own things. Ruth talked all kinds of trash, Williams openly claimed he was the best hitter of all time, Mays made hotdog basket catches. So it is nothing new.
@Tinsley_All@nut_history I’m just saying there has been different kinds of disrespect in baseball from the beginning. To pretend that it used to be more “noble” isn’t correct.
@PaulParrigon@nut_history Back in the 1980s, if a batter celebrated too much, the pitcher would typically repay him with a pitch to the ribs the next time up to remind him to check his attitude.
And it's ridiculous to imply that I want racism in the dugouts. (I don't) I'm talking about game play, man.
@PaulParrigon You’re correct, the development aspect is of most importance. I want them to win every game and overreact a lot so still learning about the rebuilding process. Not used to that as a Cardinals fan
@benno_nagel@ziplamak No he isn’t good but what I meant no good coach is going to want this team of essentially minor league players. Not sure when this turns around, doesn’t look like for a long time
Sporting KC is rebuilding; I accept that & haven't held particular expectations, although the loss to a non-league team was an unexpected embarrassment the sting of which I hoped would ignite a fire under their collective butts. I still root for our guys, even if more from the couch than the bleachers atm
@k___michael@nut_history That doesn’t make me old school. I liked baseball in the 80s and I like baseball today. Probably more today. Being mad about nets is a weird thing to be mad about.
@PaulParrigon@nut_history So you've been a baseball fan since the 80s. Which makes you 'old school' like everybody else in this silly thread. The two or 3 'new school' fans are excited about this new thing they have called night baseball. And you're scared of the dang baseballs whizzing in the stands..
@k___michael@nut_history Or maybe people finally wised up that having baseball whizzing into the stands at 90-105mphs wasn’t the safest thing. I have watched baseball since the 80s and seen plenty of people hurt. But you’re right those dang kids.
@PaulParrigon@nut_history Those people don't watch the games, they don't care. They play with their phones, watch videos on the giant TV, and take selfies. No one under 50 pays attention to the game. Thus the nets surrounding the field to protect the fans. Wasn't needed 20 years ago.
@nut_history What is old school and new school? What made it switch? Pitch clock? DH in NL, inter-league play? DH in AL? Expanded playoffs, if so, which expansion? Lowering the mound? Something else? The game has constantly evolved.
@Tinsley_All@nut_history Yeah hate all the bat flips like Tom Lawless in the World Series, oh when was that? 1987-what surely not, they showed respect back then. Or like way back in 47 when teams racially abused all the new black players from the dugout. Need that respect back 🙄
@nut_history Old. Get rid of the DH (even in the American League) and eliminate interleague games. End the 3-batter rule for pitchers and get rid of the pitch clock.
And players need to cut the celebration screams and choreography. Just PLAY and show some respect.
@nut_history There's no such thing as a 'new school' baseball fan. No new fans this century. It's as pathetic as it is sad. Maybe there's one in Puerto Rico or Venezuela, somewhere Latin possibly. Or in Taiwan or Cambodia or Laos...
@mbiv777@nut_history It is. Watched a game today. It was definitely baseball. Had pitchers and catchers, one team hitting, one team in the field. Trying to score runs, one team trying not let them score. It was baseball.
@nut_history More old school. I took a while to come around to the wild card (now I love it). But the pitch clock bugs me. I suspect it's causing more pitcher injuries, serious ones
