@mathhombre @mathinyourfeet We were all so blessed to have felt the light of Malke's wise, generous and playful soul. She and I delighted in exploring ideas together. The realm of rhombuses was one of our favorite playgrounds+

2/2 It was my sophomore year of high school. The problem was way over my head, and I honestly couldn't believe it could be solved. But struggling with it and figuring it out with Mr. Waterman in the days after the test is really a defining memory for me.

1/2 It is my birthday today and I was doing a lot of reflecting. My high school math teacher was a huge influence on me. Unfortunately he died from ALS in 2012. Because of him I wanted to study math, and it is this specific problem from the 1987 AIME that drew me in to math.

The number of users, especially in the #MTBoS and #ITeachMath worlds, on that blue social media space seems to have exploded in the last few days. The conversation is more civilized, the ads are nonexistent, and the feel is surprisingly hopeful. Come join us in the Sky! 😉

I decided to make a little video using @geogebra illustrating the relative sizes of the planets, the orbits of the planets, and an assortment of stars (including WOH G64, the largest star of known radius—1540 times the radius of our sun!).

@AlexKontorovich I think that posting your video lectures is a great thing. Hopefully students won’t skip out on your class, thinking that they can just watch the video later , but if they do, that’s on them

Had an interesting discussion offline about whether posting all my lectures to YouTube for free diminishes the value of the experience for students paying tuition at Rutgers (or this semester, Princeton). I claim it does not. Those students are paying for the opportunity to attend lectures live, ask questions in real-time, and engage with their professor during office hours and elsewhere outside of class. In fact, I would argue that recording and sharing lectures enhances the experience for paying students—they can review the material any time to study. It also has the potential added benefit to the broader community by providing free access to the same content. I’m curious to hear what you think?

@AlexKontorovich I wonder about a similar issue. If I teach a workshop that people pay for, is it unfair to them if I choose to post A free video tutorial about the same thing a couple of years later? .

So... my son nerd sniped me! He saw a video on the Fold-and-Cut Theorem by @tweetsauce and said I should figure out how to fold a piece of paper to cut out the hat and spectre tiles with one cut. Mission accomplished! This blog post has downloadable PDFs: divisbyzero.com/2024/08/14/fol…

Photos don’t do justice to how stunning this looked. In person. The enthusiasm was palpable. Oh, and it’s the best place to stand in front of to take selfies with math buddies. @divbyzero

I had an amazing time at Family Day yesterday at @BridgesMathart. Chaim Goodman-Strauss, Scott Vorthmann, and I ran a hat tile build. We found out when we got there that we were not allowed to use the floor, but we improvised and were able to make a pretty big tiling anyway.

MathFest attendees: I had such a good time with this hat tile activity at Bridges that I'm repeating it at MathFest: Friday, Aug. 9, 9:00-12:00 in the foyer across from the registration desk. Come for a few minutes or the whole time. The more the merrier! Please retweet! @maanow
