Could I say something? I don't think "gentle parenting" in its truest sense is even that common. I just think so many people had parents that were abusive and/or overly controlling that anything that doesn't look like that confuses them.

I think that’s too simplistic. It’s really more of a cohesive moral worldview than that—legitimate authority is derived from The Community, and thus deference to the community is an important moral value. Persuasion doesn’t fit into this moral model very well; The Community’s job is to shape and inform and regulate the belief/behavior of members. This is an authoritative relation. Members, meanwhile, are to be deferential to the natural authority of The Community. This is an obedient relation. Many on the DSA Left aren’t interested in condescending; they’re happy to be educated. It’s not that they all imagine themselves the leaders or voices of The Community (though, of course, some do). It’s a genuine, authentic moral orientation. It’s just not one I share or that I think is good for building an effective left.
