I condemn the military escalation in the Middle East today. The strikes by the US & Israel against Iran & the subsequent attacks by Iran undermine international security. These actions carry the risk of igniting a chain of events that no one can control in the most volatile region of the world. Lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means, including genuine dialogue and negotiations. The @UN Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace & security.

I condemn today’s military escalation in the Middle East. The use of force by the United States & Israel against Iran, and the subsequent retaliation by Iran across the region, undermine international peace & security.   All Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the Charter of the @UN. The Charter clearly prohibits “the threat of the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.”   I call for an immediate cessation of hostilities & de-escalation. Failing to do so risks a wider regional conflict with grave consequences for civilians & regional stability. I strongly encourage all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.   I reiterate that there is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes, in full accordance with international law, including the UN Charter. The Charter provides the foundation for the maintenance of international peace and security.

💡Montevideo fue escenario de un encuentro que puso a las juventudes en el centro. En el marco de la llegada del Peace Boat (Barco de la Paz) y en colaboración con UNESCO Montevideo, se realizó a bordo el Encuentro de Juventudes y Liderazgos por la Paz, que convocó a estudiantes, jóvenes líderes y autoridades de Uruguay para vivir una experiencia intercultural única. Entre las y los participantes de Uruguay se encontraban jóvenes de centros de referencia que trabajan con la Intendencia de Montevideo, la Comisión Nacional de Unesco en Uruguay y exparticipantes del Modelo de Naciones Unidas en Uruguay organizado por ANEP.  La jornada incluyó un recorrido por exposiciones —entre ellas la muestra vinculada al Premio Nobel de la Paz—, espacios de diálogo intergeneracional y un intercambio abierto sobre paz, derechos humanos y ciudadanía global. Las voces jóvenes fueron protagonistas, compartiendo iniciativas concretas y compromisos para la construcción de sociedades más justas y pacíficas. Uno de los momentos más destacados fue la participación de Juan Cristiani, ganador del Programa Youth for Peace, quien compartió su experiencia y el impacto de su trabajo en la promoción de la paz desde el liderazgo juvenil. Su testimonio reafirmó el poder transformador de las nuevas generaciones cuando cuentan con espacios reales de participación y acción. En un mundo con la generación joven más grande de la historia, este encuentro volvió a dejar un mensaje claro: las juventudes no esperan el futuro; lo construyen hoy.
