Three years later, on July 20, 1969, humanity took its first step towards Roddenberry’s vision of space travel when Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the face of the moon.

Roddenberry was interested in exploring what the human race could be. His work reflected the values of youth in the emerging counter-culture.

Star Trek represented the intellectual, forward thinking minds of the decade exploring themes of racism, sexism, class warfare, and other socio-political topics.

PAC's 60's Moments #5 - Star Trek Debuts | Man Lands on the Moon On September 8, 1966, Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek debuted to a national TV audience. Star Trek introduced an audience to twenty-third century thinking, with interplanetary travel and peace on earth.

Within weeks of the riots, activist, and coalition groups formed to create change, not only New York, but across America. On June 28, 1970, the first gay pride marches were held in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Stonewall Inn was a safe haven for the LGBTQ and homeless youth in Manhattan, New York. Unfortunately, before 1969, the US sought to “assimilate” or completely eradicate homosexuality. They conducted frequent raids on known gay bars.

PAC's 60's Moments #4 - Stonewall Riots On June 28, 1969 police raided Stonewall Inn in New York City, New York. This incited the turning point of the gay rights revolution.

Timothy Leary, a clinical psychologist at Harvard University, began his own experiments between 1960 - 1962, focusing instead of “mind expansion” and “personal truth”. Leary was fired from Harvard in 1963, but the possession of LSD did not become illegal until 1968. 5/5

Lysergic acid diethylamide, better known as “LSD”, once used in CIA and government classified mind control experiments in the 50’s, was now entering popular culture. 4/6

It wouldn’t be until 1970 that the millions of unmarried women in the country would gain the same access. “The Pill” wasn’t the only pharmaceutical heavily debated in the ‘60s. 3/4

Which allowed her the means necessary to research the first birth control pill. In 1960, the FDA approved the first birth control pill, but it wasn’t until 1965 that married couples were given the right to use it. 2/4
