Kentucky schools have a serious priority problem. While student enrollment has dropped and the number of teachers has shrank, the number of school administrators has exploded. KDE Data (2021–2025): Students: 631,660 → 630,946 (-0.11%) Teachers: 43,501 → 42,839 (-1.5%) School Admins (Superintendents + Central Office Leadership): 1,289 → 1,383 (+7.3%) Non-Teacher Certified Staff (Principals, Counselors, etc.): 9,305 → 9,649 (+3.7%) Fewer kids. Fewer teachers. But more administrators. That means worse teacher-to-student ratios… while the bureaucracy keeps growing. Kentucky’s K-12 system is being run like a make-work program for highly paid non-teaching professionals instead of focusing on actual students and classrooms. No wonder enrollment is declining even as the state population grows.

Kentucky's Superintendent of the Year and a top-three finalist for national Superintendent of the Year was just fired/quit after he emailed a demand at 3 a.m. that he be allowed to quit his job and still be paid for one year. He said he couldn't take how mean everyone was being about his inability to manage money. Both teachers' unions won't defend him because he was so awful. It makes you wonder just how horrible the rest of the nation's superintendents are if one of the top ones is this bad.
