In 1970, Penn State Chemical Engineering hired James Ultman and began a concentration in biotechnology and bioprocessing that continues today. Research in these areas has helped make numerous advances in medical treatments, therapies and quality of life.

During the 1930s, Professors Michael Cannon and Merrell Fenske focused on advancing the viscosity measurements of fluids. As a result, Cannon Instrument Company was founded, a business located in State College that is still in operation today.
