✨I’ve grown close to a stray cat at work… and now I’m torn between bringing her home or leaving her where she is.. For almost two years, I’ve been feeding this little cat who lives in a bush near my workplace. In the beginning, she wouldn’t even let me get near her. But now? She waits for me at the door every single day. She rubs against my shoes. She lets me pet her while she eats. And lately, she’s started following me when I leave, like she doesn’t want our time together to end. We’ve built such a strong bond—and that’s exactly why this decision hurts so much. Part of me feels she’d be safer and happier living indoors with me. But another part worries I’d be taking her away from the only world she’s ever known. I also live close to a highway, and the idea of her ever slipping outside terrifies me. She’s already spayed, and she’s surviving out there… but I can’t shake the feeling that she’s choosing me. The absolute audacity! 🤯 My neighbor actually came to my door and got MAD because I changed MY wifi password that she’s been using for free. ​Apparently, "the landlord said it was okay" means I have to pay her bills now? 💸😂 ​What would you even say to this? 👇

@rickygervais I was going to say dementia because my husband has it and it is very sad but he has done some hilarious things like taking food from other people’s plates at a buffet and going out with one shoe on . It helps to laugh about it so a few dementia jokes would be good .

@John_Dabell I am so sorry to hear this. You’re right that food is more than just nourishing the body, it is a social connection and a pleasure. Are you able to rinse your mouth if you get a dry mouth and feel thirsty ?

This afternoon, I had a video fluoroscopy swallowing assessment. It showed food and liquid passing into my lungs. That means eating or drinking is no longer safe for me. The risk of aspiration and infection is simply too high. So, eating and drinking are now off the menu. Tube feeding is my future. And that truth is devastating because it’s not just about food. It’s about losing something deeply human - something social, comforting, familiar, and instinctive. It’s about knowing that if I try to eat or drink, I could end up straight back in Critical Care. I will adapt because I must. But today, this loss hurts.

Could have made the instructions clearer , got everyone thinking and then asked someone by name but these strategies need to be embedded. If had enough time could do gap fill on mini whiteboards .

@WendyMissons @Headteacherchat I’m guessing you’ve not been in that situation. I have, and have so spoken to and helped a number of others in a similar position. It doesn’t matter how much the Chair is at fault, the head must remain unfailingly polite. There may be others to help, but sometimes there are not.

Anon post My chair of governors is also a parent at my school. She frequently contacts me on my personal number at weekends, sometimes very late after 9.30pm or before 6.00am, specifically to discuss her child. Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do?

@DrCarlHindy A close family member has dementia and almost everyone including a significant number of professionals ask “ do you know who I am “? If he doesn’t remember it doesn’t mean he loved/loves them any less.

IF I GET DEMENTIA….. I’d like my family to hang this wish list up on the wall where I live. I want them to remember these things. 1a. Every time you enter the room announce yourself. “Hi Dad - it’s Amanda.” NEVER ask- Do you know who I am??? That causes anxiety. • If I get dementia, I want my friends and family to embrace my reality. • If I think my spouse is still alive, or if I think we’re visiting my parents for dinner, let me believe those things. I’ll be much happier for it. • If I get dementia, don’t argue with me about what is true for me versus what is true for you. • If I get dementia, and I am not sure who you are, do not take it personally. My timeline is confusing to me. • If I get dementia, and can no longer use utensils, do not start feeding me. Instead, switch me to a finger-food diet, and see if I can still feed myself. • If I get dementia, and I am sad or anxious, hold my hand and listen. Do not tell me that my feelings are unfounded. • If I get dementia, I don’t want to be treated like a child. Talk to me like the adult that I am. • If I get dementia, I still want to enjoy the things that I’ve always enjoyed. Help me find a way to exercise, read, and visit with friends. • If I get dementia, ask me to tell you a story from my past. • If I get dementia, and I become agitated, take the time to figure out what is bothering me. • If I get dementia, treat me the way that you would want to be treated. • If I get dementia, make sure that there are plenty of snacks for me in the house. Even now if I don’t eat I get angry, and if I have dementia, I may have trouble explaining what I need. • If I get dementia, don’t talk about me as if I’m not in the room. • If I get dementia, don’t feel guilty if you cannot care for me 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s not your fault, and you’ve done your best. Find someone who can help you, or choose a great new place for me to live. With a bus and activities!! • If I get dementia, and I live in a dementia care community, please visit me often. • If I get dementia, don’t act frustrated if I mix up names, events, or places. Take a deep breath. It’s not my fault. • If I get dementia, make sure I always have my favorite music playing within earshot. • If I get dementia, and I like to pick up items and carry them around, help me return those items to their original place. • If I get dementia, don’t exclude me from parties and family gatherings. • If I get dementia, know that I still like receiving hugs or handshakes. • If I get dementia, remember that I am still the person you know and love.” ᴄᴏᴘʏ ᴀɴᴅ ᴘᴀsᴛᴇ in Honor of someone you know or knew who has dementia.
