It's about harmony between visual and story; a synergy between tone in picture and tone in narrative.
Just coz a story is moody or a moody tone is desired doesn't mean that specific Fincher vibe fits. The problem is slapping it on like a one-tone-fits-all filter.

low key lighting and sterile coloring is one of fincher’s hallmarks and he pioneered digital cinematography in that style. his dark shots work because they fit the true crime and corporate subjects but copycats can’t do it like him so and now everything looks lazy and under lit

...a lazy conflation rather than a true misunderstanding of forms.
It's def nowhere nesr as damaging as conflating period/court dramas with epics. And on a personal note, nowhere near as annoying as the wrong pluralization of "cast".

Out of all our misnomers, mislabellings, and mispronunciations, I think this is the least harmful. 😂
