What struck me was how much their sense of assurance was more than the typical brazen confidence of youth because they could regurtitate buzz points in ways that felt like it was their original thoughts.

...of trying to get them to see why this was chasing after fool's gold without looking like the old guy who hates new things. My argument was that universitt years are better (and best) spent learning immutable principles and fundamentals that technology changes around.

This! It's about harmony between visual and story; a synergy between tone in picture and tone in narrative. Just coz a story is moody or a moody tone is desired doesn't mean that specific Fincher vibe fits. The problem is slapping it on like a one-tone-fits-all filter.
luz@vnbvrnt

low key lighting and sterile coloring is one of fincher’s hallmarks and he pioneered digital cinematography in that style. his dark shots work because they fit the true crime and corporate subjects but copycats can’t do it like him so and now everything looks lazy and under lit

It's still funny as hell, though. "Series-film". "You don watch this series-film, 'Narcos'?"

...a lazy conflation rather than a true misunderstanding of forms. It's def nowhere nesr as damaging as conflating period/court dramas with epics. And on a personal note, nowhere near as annoying as the wrong pluralization of "cast".

...let emotions get the better of reason, let in-world facts be a little off, let someone take a risk because they couldn't perfect their plan, let that risk fail, let fortune save the day. Throw a little dirt on it.

I love effects like this in stories. I call it dirt. A story's construction shouldn't be so excessively clean that the rough edges of our human experience—the dirt we dig our bare feet into—are polished away. Let the lore have holes, let someone forget something...
