@saltofthisworld @FELibrary_ The air AND the earth (i.e. the ground, mountains, anything else on earth) are also moving at that speed. The ground is moving at ~1040mph and the air is moving at ~1040mph (assuming no wind). Relative to each other, they are going the same speed.

@locky82903378 @FELibrary_ The crew doesn't go to the service module. It just stores fuel, oxygen, etc and gets piped to the command module. You're right that it can't go through the heat shield for obvious reason, so the connection went around the shield, connecting to the side of the command module.
