The concept of soulmates, on its own, isn't the worst thing in the world, but I, personally, have had more negative experiences with it than positive ones and I think there's a very easy explanation as to why.
A common flaw made in storytelling is when something happens clearly because the writer wanted/needed it to rather than because it's something the character(s) would do. "Soulmates" is usually the excuse writers make when they really want/need two characters to be together, regardless if that's the best and/or most organic decision for the story.
Also, from what I've seen, most people tend to like media that promotes not being a slave to fate. Soulmates is the opposite of that and it gets under your skin when it's a ship you don't like.

The only things that MIGHT have gotten Ty Lee to join the gaang are Sokka and Zuko, but pretty much every other sign points to "no".
We have to remember that she's a citizen of the Fire Nation, and from a noble family at that. She had very little reason to betray not only her country, but almost all her friends and family who were nobles as well.
Sure, she betrayed Azula, but that was because her friend was in danger. And sure, she joined the Kyoshi Warriors, but that was after the war had ended.
Plus, Ty Lee was very happy working with the circus and was adamant about how she didn't want to leave it. The only reason she joined Azula is because Azula is scary. Team Avatar are way more friendly in comparison.
This is assuming the Boomerang Squad would even want Ty Lee or had a chance to invite her. Sokka and Katara have biases against Fire Nation citizens and it was unlikely (albeit still possible) that the team would've came across Ty Lee's circus group. Even if they did, they'd have no way of knowing she's capable of combat unless Zuko was there and felt like telling them.

This phrases the erasure of the original protagonist, those who came before him, as well as their legacies, as a good thing because a consequence of their successor's failure is she will look more important due to their absence.

Last I checked none of Lila's plans actually work either. And they keep adding mystery after mystery without actually solving any of them. Chloé's at least an actual character, Lila is a plot device with no personality.
