Sprawl doesn't have to be a curse forever. Cities in our region are using good zoning, housing, and transportation policy to beat it back. RPA's @peteharrison860 spoke to @citylab about Bridgeport's transformation over the last few decades: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

If converting a multi-family apartment building into a single-family mansion is bad and regressive then—just spitballing here—perhaps legalizing and simplifying the conversion of single-family residences into multi-family apartment buildings might be good?
Alex Yablon@AlexYablon

perhaps the most galling part of this article

@tvilinskis We debated this. Every day I see news about apartments that catch fire. In the Navy we are blindfolded and have to escape to a weather deck. Multiple egress routes are taught. There are building codes for a reason, save lives. ctmirror.org/2026/02/25/ct-…

@ctcapitolreport 80% of fire fatalities in CT are in 1-2 family homes - which are exempt from fire inspections. Modern single stair buildings are significantly safer than the majority of CT’s *current housing stock*. This was a really unfortunate and unnecessary setback for the state

In meantime I sincerely welcome fire orgs concerns about fire safety and will happily look for their proposal to inspect all 1-2 family homes in CT that represent 80% of fire fatalities and are currently exempt from inspections!

Single stair - and other sensible building code reforms - will happen in CT eventually. And we’ll get new safe homes built for the thousands of people - including fire fighters - that need them. Fire professionals that want to serve the public interest will 💯 be part of that

@StatisticUrban The gap here isn’t Eastern CT it’s Springfield-Worcester. The Hartford Line spine is fine (and should be where HST travels!) but no service between those MA cities yet

We really need to fill in that gap between Boston and NYC. Connecticut is NOT pulling its weight in the northeast megalopolis.

Sharing here that I plan to leave my role at @nycplanning in the coming weeks. After 4 productive years, this is the right moment for me to take on new challenges. I’m very proud of what we achieved, and I believe NYC is on a stronger path because of it.

Thank you for your hard work, @DanGarodnick, especially on #CityOfYes! 🎉 Best of luck on your future endeavors!
NYC Planning@NYCPlanning

Thank you, @DanGarodnick! Under your leadership, we went big on housing: the most significant zoning updates since 1961, five neighborhood plans, and 130,000 more homes for New Yorkers. A lasting legacy we’ll keep building on.

@Econ_Marshall Cea spoke on a panel at YIMBYtown 2025 in New Haven tenant organizing and protecting tenants in general is part of the pro-homes agenda. She was great and it was a really popular panel!

"There is great need and great opportunity in this housing shortage," @peteharrison860 said at the HB 8002 signing in CT this week. If we want to address the problem, we need an all hands on deck approach — and the newly signed legislation is part of that.

@otis_reid @jmhorp I worked at BB all through hs and college (and still tell this story in a IT strategy course I teach!) Their hybrid platform was working well and they were removing late fees. Owners just weren’t committed to long term business

What's even crazier is that for a brief moment, Blockbuster -- yes, the old giant rental store -- seemed to have it figured out. They had DVD by mail, which you could return to a local store for another DVD the same day, all bundled with an emerging streaming catalog
Sean T at RCP@SeanTrende

What's really crazy is if you are old enough to remember when Netflix was just a company that delivered DVDs to you for a period of time that you had to return, and that appeared destined for obsolence with the rise of streaming services and DVRs.
