Will AI deskill teachers - and if it does, is that a problem? If AI means teachers never have to create another resource, I think that's great. If it means teachers never read another essay, I think that's terrible. substack.nomoremarking.com/p/the-ethics-o…

🚨 NEW POST 🚨 'What should we do about 'reading for pleasure'?' "Reading really matters. In the final miles of secondary school, after years of failure, promoting reading for pleasure is not likely to be the place to start with Rebecca." alexquigley.co.uk/what-should-we…

Most PhD supervisors will never tell you this. The real reason PhD students fail is not methodology. It's not data. It's that they never clearly identified a research gap

When I trained to teach, the focus was on teaching the different purposes of writing. Writing to persuade, to explain, to describe. By contrast, The Writing Revolution teach writing as a means of advancing thinking. I think it's the latter approach that is more important in a world with AI. ChatGPT generates fake references to papers that don't exist. So, researchers at Stanford built Storm. It's an AI-powered app that generates well-researched articles with references to published sources. Here's how to use it:

Ask lots of questions before choosing your provider: Where exactly will my training programme take place? How much of my programme is on line? How much of the course is subject specific? Will I study in a group? Who awards my PGCE? What can I expect in my placement school?

A reminder of the verb to 'spuddle' (17th century): to work feebly or ineffectively, or to spend a lot of time getting absolutely nowhere.

I'm writing today about kennings in Old English. Essentially these are two word-metaphors that were used instead of concrete nouns, and they are exquisite. A ship was a 'wave-horse', the sea was a 'whale-road', the mind was a 'thought-chamber', and the sun was a 'sky-candle'.
