Kate Beckinsale drags Mark Ruffalo on social media for being a vocal pro-Palestinian activist and facing no professional consequences, while she & Susan Sarandon both were fired by their agents: “I guess having a penis in Hollywood really counts for a lot because you've not been fired by the same Agent … I applaud your voice and your activism but the price you pay for having a vagina while even remotely liking a post that was as un political as it could possibly be”

@GuillemBalague Guillem, Arsenal are definitely the best squad in the Prem this year but nowhere near previous teams & aren’t even the best side in Europe IMO The Prem has turned into a grind & slog & is why having a good squad has them top but it’s not good football

The treble/quadruple Arsenal talk started in January if not before That's setting an impossible bar that's been reached almost never in football history. If they win the Premier League, that IS a massive success. Reaching the CL quarter-finals, on the back of the semis last year, IS success. They are growing. Comparing them to the greatest sides in history and then criticise them every time they fall short, more than holding them to high standards, is IMO just a way to deny them credit for what they're actually achieving. Having said that, today is certainly a disappointment. Both statements are true.

I think some people forget we were joint 5th when Amorim got sacked. Getting Chsmpions League football would be great but Liverpool have taken 15 points from 33 since Carrick came in and Chelsea have imploded.

I’m on the 4th episode of this year’s Last One Laughing. At this point it’s just bizarre how bad it is. There’s not been a single funny moment in the entire show. I’m actually laughing at how unfunny it is. Jimmy and Roisin sitting in the other room pretending it’s hilarious.

@uclfantasypod @fantasyfooty Is she an awful person though? I’ll be honest I tend to stay away from the discourse around her comments as there is a lack of nuance in the arguments around what she’s actually saying & the the shouty responses which give me a “I don’t agree with Israel” “You’re antisemite” vibe

I'm not against Snape being black in the new Harry Potter series. I'm not against it on principle. There are obviously some pretty awful things and memes being said/shared that are clearly just racist. But it isn't necessarily racist to be a bit annoyed the character has been changed from the book's description, because his appearance carries meaning. 1. Snape is specifically and deliberately described as having "sallow skin" and being "pale." It mirrors the same pale complexion Voldemort has, which is partly why Snape always feels suspicious. They're designed as visual inversions of each other: Snape has a big hooked nose, Voldemort has a flat snakelike one. The whole point of Snape is that he LOOKS like the villain. Everything about his physical description screams untrustworthy. That's Rowling's deliberate misdirection, teaching readers not to judge by appearances. Change the appearance, you risk losing the power of that twist. 2. There's also an irony nobody seems to be talking about. By making Snape the suspicious, untrustworthy, seemingly villainous character AND the only prominent black actor in the cast, you've actually created the exact optics you were presumably trying to avoid. The one black guy is the one everyone's supposed to distrust? How is that progressive? 3. People are making a false equivalence with Hermione being black in the Cursed Child. That's completely fine because the books never say she's white in the text, and it doesn't affect her story either way. Snape's appearance is different. It's written into the plot. 4. The writers now have a real issue down the line. How are they going to portray Snape being bullied when younger? How are they going to portray James Potter suspending Snape upside down with Levicorpus? Surely they aren't going to force racist undertones onto Lupin, Potter, Black and Pettigrew? PLEASE do not turn this into some politically driven TV series where the Marauders' cruelty becomes a racial storyline. That would ruin both Snape AND James.

@PeterClarkeHH @fantasyfooty Thats what you want… perhaps not what the author wants. You cant have it both ways. Harry Potter seems to be a lesson on how to cope with death… hardly an escapism piece. The whole series is filled with awful people and tragedy.

@uclfantasypod @fantasyfooty There is a sound basis in the original books to say Snape could be black & it have no effect on the story other than upsetting people who either want it exact or are prejudice I want to step out of the real world when reading/watching Potter, not be reminded how awful people are

@PeterClarkeHH @fantasyfooty Because it blurs the subtext. It’s a fantasy series for children, and making political/social allegories should be simple and clearly defined. Surely if i’m overstepping, then so are the producers by making any changes from the source material?

@uclfantasypod @fantasyfooty Absolutely but in the fake wizarding world she does this through magic & no other device, what it mirrors in the real world is different but in the context of a made up world bound by her imagination & rules you’re over stepping implying a supposed dark wizard can’t be black 🤷🏻‍♂️

@PeterClarkeHH @fantasyfooty JK Rowling absolutely infers that the wizarding world’s view on “magic blood” is a direct allegory for racism, naziism and elitism. Subtext exists to make the world richer. It’s a disservice to the books to not make the overt link

@uclfantasypod @fantasyfooty You’re applying your own world view & slant to the narrative though on what you believe defines mixing blood when the author clearly sets the template that’s entirely about magic Sex, colour, religion & so on are never on the table in the context of the world built by the author

@PeterClarkeHH @fantasyfooty I was thinking more along the lines of Snape’s era though as not much is really said. It’s more of a slytherin in context with the death eaters than just a regular slytherin… appreciate my point didnt make that particularly clear

@fantasyfooty Brilliant points. There’s also the issue that slytherin does not want “blood mixing” and the death eaters are representations of a Nazi like group… which is very problematic. I think any character other than a slytherin/death eater could have been cast by a black actor

@fantasyfooty This is just over thinking it, Snape’s general persona is 100% his demeanour & actions, so whether he’s black or white as long as he gives off the same vibe it’s irrelevant Rickman was almost a perfect Snape except for being 30 years to old but I got over it & will get over this

It’s extremely horrifying that a member of the police who’s sworn to keep the public safe is just casually hitting children. He may need to learn some manners but that’s a job for his parents, if he’s made a mistake he shouldn’t be hit for it. Just because a kid is using a word you don’t like doesn’t mean you should hit him.
