Researcher in Teagasc Grange looking at grass-fed beef and suckler-beef clover systems. My passion for beef and tillage stems from the home farm.

A contrasting beef production week. 27 month old steers were slaughtered off a forage only diet as part of my trial work. They never received any concetrates in their lifetime. In contrast at home bulls were brought to the factory at 16 months finished off ad-lib concentrates.

The impact of clover on suckler beef cattle performance will be discussed next week at the @TeagascBeef conference. These heifers were finished off grass-clover swards with no meal at finishing. Carcass weight 308kg, R=, 3=, 19 months of age. @TeagascGrass10 @teagasc

@MjScallan I haven’t personally seen or heard any myself this year, but of course it can be an issue this time of the year.

@Walsh50Brendan Just from my experience, I have always seen the grass content return to at least 75 % content the following spring. We had 7kg/acre of grass in our mix.

@PeterDoyle_1 @TeagascGrass10 @TeagascBeef Have you any experience of the grass content dropping in a red clover silage sward? In our 2021 & 2022 set paddocks the grass content fell off after yr1 but the red clover is stronger than ever and doesn’t look to be going anywhere at the moment

@Walsh50Brendan @TeagascGrass10 @TeagascBeef The clover content changes throughout the year, it was 15% for 1st cut, 50% for 2nd cut and typically 80- 90% for 3rd cut. So for a red clover silage field I would expect that content. I would not graze the field at that 90% content.

Excellent PhD opportunity available to work on the @agriculture_ie funded Beef-Quest project focused on reducing the finishing age of Irish beef cattle. This PhD will encompass a mixture of on farm data collection, animal production trials and farm systems modelling (1/2)

Calving kicked off in the Derrypatrick herd this week with this Whitecliffe Orwell heifer calf weighing 48kg at birth Orwell €170 on terminal, 5.5% calving difficulty on mature cows, not suitable for heifers at 12.2% CD. Calved no problem, up and sucking Only 82 more to go!

It was great to get a brief insight into beef research in Australia. Despite getting 900mm of rain on farm the lack of seasonality is obvious! A key similarity to home is the urgent requirement to focus research on enteric methane emissions and incorporating legumes into pastures

Got an oppurtunity to visit suckler beef farms in Indiana, America. • Grass-based systems • Different grazing management (see pictures) • Alot of Angus genetics • Strongest breeding focus is calving ease and marbling • Alot of zero nitrogen systems and dependence on clover
