True. They were all in their 30s in the 80s. Only 4 teams won cups in the 80s that were dominated by the Islanders and oilers.flames and Canadians broke up a few oilers run to 5 cups eventually and Gretzky going to LA. Gretzky was a good not great skater. His super power was his vision and hockey IQ. He saw things a few beats before other players did. He saw things others just didn't and he made players around him better with his ability to make a play and finding the open guy coming late by curling just inside the blue line or from his office behind the net. No one was better at that.

@PeterFee182 @barrylongii By the way, you do realize Yvan Cournoyer fared just fine in the 1970s, right? 5' 7" 178 lbs. Gretzky was TEN TIMES the player the Roadrunner was. He'd have fared just fine in the 1970s. Seems to me guys like Sittler, Clarke, Lafleur, etc. struggled in the 1980s. There you go.

@PeterFee182 @barrylongii Actually, if BOBBY HULL had played, and TONY ESPOSITO started every game, it's Canada 8-0-0. Hull had the most points of any North American born player against Tretiak. And Esposito? He went 3-1-1 in the '72 tournament. Against USSR, 2-1-1, .882, 3.25.

@OleTimeHardball Koufax. Altho Roger Clemens should be on this list as well. But Koufax was so great it doesn’t matter. He tipped his pitches. Elbows out curveball made no difference they knew. They couldn’t hit anyway despite knowing it was coming.

Canada cup paled in comparison to the Summit series in 72. Had it not been for Clarke breaking karlamovs ankle and Paul hendersons brilliance late in the series Canada losses. No Orr didn’t help either as he had surgery in the summer again and couldn’t play. The CCCP was not the red scourge they were prior to the 1980 miracle.

@PeterFee182 @barrylongii Oh, I've seen all those clips. And Semenko basically played 60 games a season and never in those Canada Cups, which Gretzky dominated. And DENNIS POTVIN, the true MVP of the '76 Canada Cup, and TEN TIMES better in his own end than Orr, said you couldn't catch Gretzky. To elusive.

@sportsscott @barrylongii Cheevers was terrible Vs Montreal always. Gilles Gilbert faired no better in 78 as Lafleur blew one past him late in game 7 from the blue line and the bruins lost in OT as Mario Tremble and Yvonne Lambert hooked up to bury the winner and continue bostons ineptitude vs Montreal.

@PeterFee182 @barrylongii Calking Gretzky a pussy is fool- hearty. And Cheevers WAS in goal all those times the Bruins lost to the Habs. You forget, of course, that Eddie Johnson was THE goalie in the '72 finals, whereas CHEEVERS was terrible sans game 6. Recall Boston nearly blowing a 5-1 lead in G1?

@sportsscott @barrylongii I also firmly believe had Ratelle not been hurt in 72 and missed the final the result would have different regardless of Orr’s greatness. Ratelle had 109 points that year in 60 games. He was easily the best player in the league in 72. The GAG line was a force in the early 70s.

Yes and fortunately for us Orr was hurt and had another of many surgeries after that season. As i recall orr missed about 20 games that year and played hurt most of it. The Bruins also lost Esposito in that series to injury as well and lost all three games in the Boston Garden that year. It mattered not as Tony Esposito and the hawks kicked our ass next round 4-1.

Horseshit Orr changed the game. Orr could also handle himself on the ice. Gretzky won a bunch of Lady Bings and was attached at the hip to Semenko in Edmonton and McSorley in LA because he was a pussy who needed protection and was frail and unable to play a physical game. Orr won the scoring title twice as a defenseman. Before Orr the most points a D scored in a season was like 62. Orr scored 100 plus points in 6 consecutive seasons. Harry Howell rangers d was so happy in 67 when he won the Norris because he said after 67 he’d never have a chance again because Orr was going to win it for the next 10 years. He was close. He won it for the next 8 before his knee was gone. Orr played half his career on one leg because the opposition was so overmatched and unable to defend him the ended up taking his knees out when he rushed the puck. Ever wanna see how dominate he was? Watch him rag the puck on YouTube while killing penalties. He’d get the puck and no one could get it back. He’d just skate around for a minute or so and either score short handed or ice the puck and go for a change. You wanna know how great Orr was? Ask Bobby Clarke. He’ll tell ya. youtu.be/-pFmQFnAOVs?si…

@PeterFee182 @barrylongii Actually, Gretzky said Howe. So did Orr. So did Lemieux. And Orr won on 2 Stanley Cups and 3 MVPs. Gretzky easily tops both those. Was FAR better in the playoffs and internationally.

Goals buddy not points. Orr is easily the best player of all time. He won the scoring title twice as a defenseman. He scored 100 points 6 consecutive seasons and won 8 straight Norris trophies. Watch YouTubes of him ragging the puck while killing penalties. Better yet ask Bobby Clarke if the flyers. He'll tell ya
