@PhillipLaings It does my head in how many people drive by accelerating, breaking, accelerating, breaking, accelerating. Each road and traffic scenario has it's own rhythm and flow, you can either relax and tune into that, or fight it, and be endlessly frustrated - and burn gas needlessly.

Around 50 years ago while travelling around the South Island, my boyfriend and I did the Mobil Economy run which was a thing of the time. It actually worked - paying attention to your driving style, using accelerator carefully. We were in a Morris 1100 so hardly a drain on gas.

@hiddenandfree You're guessing about a group of people who were not asked that question. Most assumed, very probably wrongly, that they were uninfected. The adult Long-COVID rate from one Omicron infection is about 15%:

@PeterJBeaver If you believed that the infection rate is 99%, then the 1 in 11 figure would be the more relevant instead of 11.9% (or 1/8). In any case, this survey is consistent with the 5-10% estimate many LC scientists (including Michael Baker) have used in the last couple of years.

Aotearoa NZ has reported it's first population survey (n=9,253) of Long-COVID prevalence. @PeterJBeaver @CovidSafeNZ Not enough for systematic analysis of what % have LC for > 1 year. Overseas findings imply around 6k kiwis might have severe long term long covid. Not that that's the full extent of LC harm but it's important not to conflate these tragic cases with milder or transient forms.

@hiddenandfree The rate among those with known infection is 1/8. Those who believed they were never infected were not asked about LC. But in all likelihood most were infected. It's next to impossible to create a control group now because infection rate could be around 99%.

@PeterJBeaver From the link, 1 in 11 with LC sounds reasonable. However, it doesn't seem like the survey has a control group, or compared to data pre-2020. In other words, we don't really know the baseline, and how much of the 1 in 11 was due to covid or due to other respiratory illnesses.

Severe long term long covid, present more than a year, and affecting normal activities 'a lot', affects around 0.7% of UK and 1.3% of US adults. My 2023 estimate was 0.14% in NZ x.com/i/status/16816…

10/ What might this mean for NZ? Almost all NZ's adult covid cases were omicron, and in the vaxxed. Applying the UK omicron SLTLC rate of 0.14% AND assuming one omicron infection per NZ adult, 5,720 kiwis could be expected to have SLTLC - a MUCH lower rate than the UK or USA.

@Lou_vs_ME @vincristine Most Long-COVID research uses self-report, much like most diagnosis begins with self-report. Fancy term is PROMS (patient reported outcomes measures). Some duration data is included. A question about symptom start date, and a question if they still have symptoms.

🧵Today we found out the Health Ministry has been sitting on a survey that shows the large scale of Long Covid (& ME/CFS) in New Zealand. Feeling emotional😡 >400,000 Kiwi adults had had LC at some point by June 2025 - incl 185,000 w ongoing LC Prevalence 4.3% - 1 in 23 adults

@Lou_vs_ME Didn't they introduce a long covid code for GP visits? I wonder if those numbers are available? I've seen claims there's no long covid in NZ bc the register has less than 2,000 people on it...I don't know what the actual number is, but I doubt many know about the register.

New Zealand isn't counting or costing Long Covid! 🤔 The two central govt health agencies told Breakfast TV, when asked to respond to patients' calls, that they have: "no plans for Long Covid monitoring nor for any economic analysis" #LongCovidAwareness

If we assume that 100% of NZ population have been infected now, and if we assume that children experience Long-COVID at about the same rate as adults, then as many as 635,000 people in Aotearoa may have experienced Long-COVID some time in the three years since February 2022.

@PeterJBeaver @Lou_vs_ME So, it looks like they published the findings but deliberately omitted the covid & long covid results with some bs excuse? 🧐 25/26 won't be published until the end of the year, but if they opt to not include that question again then the findings for 2024/25 won't be in it.
