Horse owners are notorious for encouraging overgrazing, thinking that short grass is what is best for their horses. But we show them that the opposite is often true, plus long grass also provides habitat for wildlife AND has many other benefits. This article is very educational... equiculture.net/blog/horses-sh… #equiculture #horses #environment #healthylandhealthyhorse #EquicentralSystem

We're listening. 💚 The mowing that took place here earlier this week was a mistake, and we’re really sorry that it happened. We’re proud of our green campus and, while 38% is already set aside for nature, we are committed to doing much more. (1/9)

So sad to see this on my own university, after years of campaigning for more sensitive/reduced mowing: pics show Monday & Wednesday this week. @SussexUni @CTRH

@NiallMachin1 Yes, in Bath. Was going to suggest meeting up but we arrived yesterday evening for book launch nosycrow.com/product/grandp… and have to leave at 8am tomorrow as need to be home by 1. Shame would have been great to catch up. You in London at all for LUC?

@ManorEstates @DaveGoulson @SussexUni @CTRH 'Who's paying' in a broader sense is pretty much the reason why people rail against excessive grass mowing. The price we pay is not just the price of the maintenance contract.

@PeterMassini @DaveGoulson @SussexUni @CTRH Who's paying to maintain all of this? Compared to a 18 cut per year grass schedule that took about a 5th of the contract price just bed maintenance and shrub hedge cutting twice a year at its current level took about a 3rd with waste removal and overheads taken into account

@ManorEstates @DaveGoulson @SussexUni @CTRH Surely answer then is to not have acres of mown grass. Plant with perennials, create rain-gardens, etc. Mown grass unless for sports or amenity parkland is often just 'green' space between budings - seen as a liability to be 'managed' cheaply rather than a potential asset. 🤷🏽‍♂️ 🤦🏻‍♂️

@DaveGoulson @SussexUni @CTRH Unfortunately leaving it any longer is inviting a bit of a headache later on Cut and collection is way more expensive and troublesome as it needs specialist machines and more manpower. This will allow more beneficial wildflowers and grasses to grow through.

@CEAK I’ve worked in fisheries and conservation for 45 years, including 20 years in the Thames catchment creating and restoring habitats for a wide range of river and wetland species, especially fish. I can assure you that Beavers do not eat fish. I suspect Otters may been involved.

I don’t normally retweet stuff I strongly disagree with, but I’m making an exception here - simply to demonstrate how detached we have become from nature when someone who is trying to “save the planet” appears to be endorsing such misinformation. We’ve got some work to do folks.
Clare E A Kingston 🇮🇱 I stand with Israel@CEAK

@BenGoldsmith @happykerching I was informed by someone who managed and ran (past tense, no fish now) a fishing lake in the Cotswold Water Park that European beavers, the size of labradors, invasive wrong type for here, have been hauling up valuable fish just to eat small parts of them, leaving dead carcasses

It's really pretty simple. This is happening because of a combination of habitat loss and overuse of pesticides. Until the Government delivers a reversal of both, bird populations will continue to decline... theguardian.com/environment/20…

Manifesto writers, please take note. The law requires Government to halt wildlife decline by 2030. In case anyone thought it'd be easy, see new new bird stats today: relentless decline. Success means transformation in #nature investment & regulation. gov.uk/government/sta…
