Good call yesterday with @Keir_Starmer. We discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s actions are putting global economic stability at risk. We will work with our partners to ensure freedom of navigation can resume as soon as possible. We also discussed the upcoming EU-UK Summit. A key moment to deliver on last year’s commitments and further strengthen our partnership.

In Ukraine, the situation with forced mobilization has become so dire that it risks sparking something close to a civil war. Today, an officer involved in coercive conscription was killed — his throat was slit. Since the country is getting deeper and deeper into chaos and trust to the government has reduced dramatically, people are taking matters into their own hands, seeing themselves as the only force capable of protecting their lives from both external aggression and domestic policies. Ukraine should have developed the financial incentives for mobilization instead of crossing all the read lines of human rights violations. Corruption also has played its role in demotivating people to fight

I had a call with President of Iran, @drpezeshkian. We discussed the situation in Iran and the Middle East. A ceasefire and a diplomatic solution are urgently needed. I emphasized the need to end the strikes on neighbouring countries and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait Hormuz. Despite the disagreements, it is important to maintain dialogue.

Thank you @YvetteCooperMP for convening a call of over 40 countries on the Strait of Hormuz. This waterway is a global public good. Iran cannot be allowed to charge countries a bounty to let ships pass. International law doesn’t recognise pay-to-pass schemes. Today, we looked at diplomatic, economic, and security measures to restore safe passage, alongside working with the shipping industry. The EU’s Aspides naval mission has already assisted 1,700 ships in the Red Sea and must be scaled up. We cannot afford to lose another critical trade route. We support work by the UN on humanitarian corridors in the Strait to get food and fertilisers out. The EU has tools to track and facilitate transit that could help with that.

@joni_askola In fact, European patriots have high hopes for Hungary. The people of Hungary will make the right decision—they, and only they, will decide their own future. You and your ilk can shove your globalist manifesto right up your backside.

People should not get their hopes up too much about Hungary. Orbán has spent years centralizing power to ensure the elections are not fair. If they were, he would lose in a landslide. Let’s hope the margin is too large to manipulate, so Europe can rid of its biggest traitor

While Christians set their Easter tables, Ukraine is repelling 700+ Russian drones. Zelensky proposed a ceasefire. Russia answered with more attacks. Anyone here still buying their peace talks?

The €90 billion EU loan for Ukraine is facing serious difficulties. Kallas who visited Kyiv today, said the EU is currently not ready to approve the funds, and the obstacles appear broader than just Hungary and Orbán. While many in Ukraine hoped the issue would vanish after Hungary’s April elections, the lack of any mention of a quick resolution points to deeper problems: Europe’s ongoing energy crisis, internal debates about restoring energy ties with Russia, and growing reluctance to provide massive new financing. Even if Orbán loses power, the loan is far from guaranteed. This puts additional pressure on Ukraine’s budget and may force Kyiv to reconsider its wartime strategy and negotiating position.

Dear President @ZelenskyyUa, we meet at a dangerous moment. Russia’s war against Ukraine continues. And a new war has captured the Middle East. Both wars are very much interlinked. In the face of this, we stand together. My opening remarks in Kyiv ↓

Bucha has come to symbolise the cruelty of Russia’s war. Of the civilians killed, many were shot at close range. Some with their hands tied behind their backs. Four years after these mass killings, we remember the victims. What happened here cannot be denied. The EU is committed to ensuring that these crimes do not go unpunished, including by supporting the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression, alongside the Claims Commission. Russia must be held accountable for what it has done to Ukraine.

So much for Trump and Putler! In 48 hours, Zelensky has signed ten-year defense agreements in three Persian Gulf capitals, with more industrial partnership contracts on the table, and he has sent 200 air defense experts. Just a reminder: in just a year, Ukraine has gone from a "country without papers" to a protective weapons exporter and security expert, turned to by the world's richest countries. ✊🇺🇦
