@PeteSchaad Since 2020 there have been 6 expansion teams in the MLS. That tells Me that the Whitecaps have received a lot of expansion fees. Add in the Apple TV deal and I think Whitecaps would have received north of $100 million in fees.

When the Whitecaps group joined MLS, the exchange rate was almost at par. That changed significantly after 2015. It’s always an issue for CDN sports entities in US Leagues. On top of 1st team, add academy leagues at U16 & U18, and the reserve program in MLS Next Pro. 1/2

@Infokid1Infokid Annual SUM dividends are not disclosed publicly. I had heard in the 20-teens it was around $12M per team helping underwrite losses. During and after lockdown, not sure. Recently the expansion fees and commercial deals increased substantially. Not sure it’s that much though.

@PeteSchaad How much expansion money and Apple revenue have they gotten? They got a piece of $500 million San Diego paid for expansion.

@CoulAntoine This was one idea in 2018; field the CDN MLS reserve teams in CPL. Not sure the overhead goes down much. You still have to travel coast to coast, and would reserves draw support? CPL struggled with idea that they were “second tier” while also muddying the CanChamps tourney.

@PeteSchaad Instead of Next Pro they could help start a second division in Canada.

@PeteSchaad Seems like a lot of things in this country got worse after 2015. I wonder what happened? 🤔

@RataganCan They had/have satellite academies in Western Canada and one in London. The 3 CDN MLS clubs have territorial agreements I believe.

@PeteSchaad Did they also have academies in every province west of Ontario (I’m not sure about the territories). All had to be setup pretty much from scratch.

@PeteSchaad I think that 20 to 25 million they got for Davies pretty much covers their costs.

@AruyanP99261 You hear this one a lot. 1 significant sell-on. Not really developed through youth academy as he basically came straight into second team. Was that money reinvested? Some? No idea. The current recruitment team will eclipse that fee (on a cumulative scale) if allowed time.

A great example of how important a sports specific venue can be to its inhabitants. I’ve asked friends who go…”who stood out for the C’s?” They have no idea. They barely understand the level. They go for nostalgic vibes and authenticity of the experience.

The Nat. 75 years young. Except for renos along foul lines. Not sure there is a better pro minor league baseball park out there? Tenants have been the Capilanos, Mounties, Triple-A Canadians, UBC, and current Vancouver Canadians. Beauty of a day for baseball! 1/2

I am completely gutted by today’s result but incredibly proud of our season. We’ve come a long way in five years and this was the best result in our 150+ year history. More to do. But for now, we have so much to be proud of, Reds.

@ziplamak Great point. Would the owners ever turn the league over to a true soccer executive, even a foreigner? Something tells me not.

@theLUCASTDS The league would divide itself after one season (which would be interesting on its own). You’d then create two balanced schedules of 16 teams each…unlike what there is now. (The league can’t just keep expanding forever just from a scheduling standpoint).

@PeteSchaad So they pay huge franchise fees and then get relegated for being a perceived “squatter”?

They could split the league into two once they achieve 32 franchises. Start with an internal First and Second division, divided by west and east to ensure there isn’t a funky geographic imbalance.
🆒 Chris Parry@ChrisParry

@curtisandrews The owners are gunning for regular, growing shares of league expansion franchise fees. The SDFC deal has them over their skis on what they think a team is worth. Smarter move would be a mass expansion for a second division, and to let excellent organizations emerge via promotion.

@theLUCASTDS Owners, (especially recent ones) would struggle with any perceived 2nd tier. But MLS has previously challenged franchises to “step it up” ambition wise. (San Jose for example). I think the next phase is separating the clubs who are intelligent and proactive from the “squatters”.

@PeteSchaad I think a west and east division playing mostly separate with a unified title is more likely than a 1st/2nd division People aren’t playing huge franchise fees in order to not ever get a game against Messi even every 2nd season

@BasketballPhil You mean “what’s left of the sports media”? They’ll just be relieved they don’t have to talk about soccer.

If the Whitecaps FC do in fact leave will the sports media in Vancouver turn on Soccer and start bitching about it the way they do about the NBA because the Grizzlies left ?
