The word "robot" was born on stage, not in a lab. It comes from the Czech word "robota"—forced labor—and first appeared in Karel Čapek's 1920 play "R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots)." A playwright coined it. Not an engineer. From day 1, robots and the arts have been inseparable.

One month to go until we close the open call for @CVPR Art Gallery🤖🎨 Last year we had everything from rotting apples and interactive robots to multiscreen sculptures. I can't wait to see what people submit this year😍 Details: tinyurl.com/CVPR2026 #CVPR2026 #creativeAI

1/N 🎨🤖Given only a static image of an oil painting by an expert artist, can a robot infer the corresponding control actions, such as trajectory, orientation, and applied force, to accurately reproduce the painting? 🖌️Introducing IMPASTO: a robotic oil-painting system that integrates learned pixel dynamics with model-based planning to reproduce paintings from target images. This project is led by @yingke_wang18 (wykac.com) – a roboticist and an artist. Project website: impasto-robopainting.github.io

@JulienBlanchon Hey, not that I know of. Should be pretty straightforward if it has position control. I would be happy to help make this work!

Sim2Real (pydiffvg to real) gap is super tough. We usually use canvas board to avoid the wet paper buckling. Check out our work, Spline-FRIDA, which learns all those z parameter calibrations automatically. It's still differentiable too. arxiv.org/abs/2412.00597
Mario Klingemann💧💦@quasimondo

Trying to translate the strokes I generated with pydiffvg onto paper. And again the difficult part is finding the right z values which depend on the desired stroke width, the correct calibration of the plane and how much the paper starts to buldge when it gets wet.

@PeteyRobots Ah, what a coincidence - just a few days ago @manusai had mentioned Frida when I asked it to summarize the state of the art in robotic painting. I just had not gotten around to taking a closer look. Which of the many GitHub branches is the best one to get started?

I sat next to this work all Summer. It was incredible to see what Adam Hung and @UksangYoo were able to accomplish in such a short time with simple hardware (cheap pottery wheel and single, rigid end effector)

Can robots make pottery🍵? Throwing a pot is a complex manipulation task of continuously deforming clay. We will present RoPotter, a robot system that uses structural priors to learn from demonstrations and make pottery @HumanoidsConf @CMU_Robotics 👇robot-pottery.github.io 1/8🧵
