On Thursday, Zone 3 Sergeant Andrew Robinson, Public Safety Director Sheldon Williams, and Councilmember Bob Charland handed out 180 free steering wheel locks at Venson Park in Beltzhoover in an effort to reduce vehicle thefts. The event was organized in conjunction with the Hilltop Alliance, thanks to a generous donation by Erie Insurance. In addition to receiving a free lock, community members learned some additional tips from police on how to further protect their vehicles from would-be thieves.

Pittsburgh Police, alongside their @FBIPittsburgh and local partners, executed a series of arrest and search warrants on Thursday morning, in connection with a large-scale drug trafficking investigation. Sixteen people were indicted on federal charges and a seventeenth on state charges. Eight firearms, including two AR-style rifles, four+ kilograms of cocaine, quantities of heroin/fentanyl, and MDMA were recovered. This operation sends a clear message: Those who choose to traffic illegal guns, poison our communities with dangerous drugs, and threaten the safety of our residents will be identified, investigated, and held accountable," - Pittsburgh Police Chief, Jason Lando. The Spring 2026 Citizen's Police Academy (CPA) class graduated in May, but members and officers continue to gather to share experiences and strengthen friendships. A small group met for dinner this week, following a previous gathering in June. CPA gives residents an inside look at law enforcement operations and community policing strategies. This program strengthens trust between officers and residents while building lasting bonds among neighbors collaborating for safer communities. If you want to play a proactive role in shaping your community and connecting with neighbors, consider applying for the next Citizen's Police Academy class! Registration for the fall session is not open just yet, but you can find more information here: shorturl.at/Of63c

Today, we honor the memory of our colleague and friend, Officer Calvin Hall, who tragically passed away on July 17, 2019 following an off-duty shooting. Officer Hall embodied the very best of law enforcement. He began every shift with his personal motto, "Time for me to make a difference." Today, those words are prominently displayed outside the Officer Calvin M. Hall Public Safety Center in Northview Heights. Earlier this week, Public Safety Director Sheldon Williams and Police Chief Jason Lando paid their respects at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial of Allegheny County. Lest we forget.

It is with heavy hearts that the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police announces the passing of equine officer, Spirit, following an inoperable bone fracture. Spirit joined the department in 2017 as the second horse in the Bureau's then-newly relaunched Mounted Unit. Donated by former Pittsburgh Steeler Stephon Tuitt, Spirit was a ‘people person horse’ from his first day on the job. He enjoyed countless school visits, parades, and events, building bridges between our police officers and the communities they serve. Officer Jamie Bush, who coordinates the Mounted Unit, reflects, “Spirit was our gentle giant. He was always calm, always patient, just good at his job all around. We’re heartbroken, but we know his life was full of as much joy as he brought to our friends and neighbors.” Thank you, Spirit, for all of your hard work and service to the City of Pittsburgh. You will be missed.

It has been an incredibly busy first half of 2026 for the City of Pittsburgh and Department of Public Safety. Our teams have worked tirelessly, from major events such as the NFL Draft which drew more than 800,000 visitors, the annual Pittsburgh Marathon and Fourth of July celebrations, to managing safety operations for the filming of the television show Mayor of Kingstown. Additionally, our dedicated Public Safety admin staff are out in the neighborhoods connecting with people where they are. By strengthening relationships with residents and our city’s youth, they are building trust, providing critical outreach, and directly connecting community members with the essential resources they need to thrive. Public Safety Director Sheldon Williams shares his deep appreciation for all Public Safety personnel, emphasizing the hard work of every single staff member. 🔗 Learn more about Pittsburgh Public Safety: pittsburghpa.gov/safety 🔗 Join our team and apply today: shorturl.at/Xo8oJ
