@eLDeeTheDon , you are truly a blessing, sir. I’m listening to your songs on a road trip to the countryside, and it’s pure nostalgia. Music like this is rare these days. I remember back in the day when we used to head out to club parties in @UnilorinNGR .

The whole of University of Ilorin permanent site descended into riot and chaos in 2002 because Coca-Cola increased its price to N25. Students went on a rampage and Coca-Cola had to build the SUG relaxation spot. Coke and toast bread on walkway was for big boys and girls. Regular girls bought pure water, they would put a straw in the pure water sachet to look premium. In the hostel, "na baba abeg you get pure water for room" if you gave out a sachet of pure water, it was generosity at its peak. Boys would hide pure water sachet under their beds. Accommodation was N1,370 and students missed deadlines to pay. Some students would fight for accommodation slot just to resell at N3,000. That N3,000 still came with a payment plan of 6 months 😃😃. Cab fare from school to Tanke was N30 or N40. Students would stand by the road side under the hot sun begging for "lift". Fuel was N26 per litre but boys car dey empty tank consistently and that was even luxury. I remember driving to school, once I got past Sanrab na to put the gear in neutral to take me to Chapel sec school. Then climb Oke odo by Bekadims, neutral again to take me to school gate, fire till university quarters, down shift while approaching the bridge then neutral all the way. N300 fuel must last for a week. Regular Benz 230E injector wey dey drink fuel like mad.

THE COURT SHOULD NOT BE USED AS A STAGE FOR MEDIA BRIEFING Courtrooms in a constitutional democracy are open to the public not as arenas for performance, but as sanctuaries for the orderly administration of justice. Their openness promotes transparency and public confidence, yet it also imposes a duty of restraint on all who enter. Access to the courtroom is therefore a right exercised within boundaries of decorum, discipline, and respect for judicial authority. The courtroom exists solely for adjudication, and its openness cannot be stretched to permit activities unrelated to that purpose. It is against this background that the Nigerian Bar Association @NigBarAssoc views with grave concern the incident involving Mr. Omoyele Sowore @sowore, yesterday March 24th, 2026, at the Federal High Court, Abuja. Mr. Sowore entered the courtroom accompanied by a number of individuals carrying camera phones and recording equipment. He proceeded to set up what appeared to be preparations for a press conference within the courtroom itself. Members of his team attended to him, fanning his face and tidying his appearance in a manner akin to a broadcast setting. He subsequently moved into the inner bar, sat on one of the tables, and, as cameras were directed at him, began addressing what he described as “a range of national issues.” Notably, Mr. Sowore’s case was not listed for hearing, and he was not accompanied by any legal practitioner during this episode. The development led to tension within the courtroom and a confrontation with learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Musibau Adetunbi, SAN, who objected to the conduct and insisted on maintaining courtroom decorum. Courtrooms are solemn spaces dedicated to the administration of justice. Any conduct that undermines the dignity of the court, intimidates legal practitioners, or disrupts proceedings constitutes a grave affront to the rule of law. The use of a courtroom as a venue for publicity, advocacy theatrics, or confrontation is unacceptable and inconsistent with the discipline required in judicial proceedings. While every Nigerian, including Mr. Sowore, is entitled to attend and observe court proceedings, such right must be exercised responsibly and with due regard to courtroom decorum. Public access to the courts does not extend to converting the courtroom into a platform for press briefings or actions capable of undermining the dignity and authority of the court, whether or not the court is in session. The NBA therefore condemns Mr. Sowore’s disruption of the courtroom environment and expresses solidarity with Musibau Adetunbi, SAN, and all lawyers who insisted on maintaining decorum. We also call on court authorities to ensure that courtrooms remain protected spaces for the orderly administration of justice and free from acts capable of intimidating legal practitioners in the discharge of their professional duties. The NBA will continue to defend the dignity of the legal profession and the sanctity of judicial proceedings. The courtroom must remain a place of order, respect, disciplined advocacy, and responsible public access, not spectacle, confrontation, or disorder. Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN President, Nigerian Bar Association

REFLECTIONS ON MARSHAL, TRACY AND UMAHI Marshal Abubakar went out of his way to rally support for Tracy Ohiri. She was going to be remanded in custody, but for the very timely, vehement and strategic actions of the learned counsel. It is easy to say that he was doing his professional job. But how many lawyers will be willing to put up such a fight against the Police and a serving Minister and former governor in this country? Tracy walked out of the lion’s den unhurt. From what the public has been told, her initial claim of indebtedness stood at about N25 million. She is said to have added interests on the sum which brought it to over N300 million. I have examined the evidence available in the public domain, my view is that we’re dealing with a case of destructive greed and entrenched ingratitude. A contract that was performed more than ten years ago cannot be enforced in 2026 without the debt being acknowledged by the debtor. It is statute barred. Umahi refused to acknowledge the debt and insisted on using law enforcement to fight Tracy Ohiri. While the Minister’s oppressive actions are questionable and condemnable, the reality is that the alleged sum isn’t recoverable due to the fact that the cause of action, assuming there is one, is statute barred. Beyond the issue of limitation period, the failure of Tracy to adduce evidence to prove her claims makes her case more untenable. Sentiments cannot supplant elementary legal principles. Marshal, with the support of activists, was able to secure a N110 million settlement for Tracy. Umahi, ostensibly acting through his proxies, agreed to discontinue all his legal actions against her. The suggestion that the lawyer betrayed or coerce her does not hold water. How did he betray her? The same lawyer declined the monetary offers made to him. If you have an understanding with a client, and the client reneges on it, it is irritable. She was given the option of declining and returning the money but she decided to keep it. By the way, the total amount she paid her lawyers is less than ten percent of what she received. Some strange people are seeking to use this case to attack “human rights lawyers” and “activists”. They are questioning the lawyer for accepting fees despite being a human rights lawyer. This is wickedness. A human rights lawyer is a lawyer. There’s no special university or law school in this country for training “human rights lawyers” or “activist lawyers”. It is disrespectful and wicked for people expect lawyers who are devoting their professional career to fight dangerous causes for the oppressed to work with empty stomach. Human rights lawyers have bills to pay, they have families to cater for, they’ve offices and staff to look after. Nigerians should stop feeling entitled to pro bono services. If a lawyer elects to offer his services pro bono, it is out of goodwill. I disagree with those who say that Marshal did not represent her well. Such view may be due to lack of adequate information. A client who records a conversation with a lawyer has ulterior motives. We should not shy away from this issue. In the record, the lawyer was evidently frustrated. There is no part of the said audio recording where the lawyer told her that she was going to receive N305m or any specific amount. Please prove me wrong. In the audio, the lawyer made it clear that the undertaking made to him via messages by Umahi’s friend, who happens to be a lawyer, was sufficient. It is ridiculous that Tracy expected Umahi, who has been denying the alleged debt, to sign a written undertaking. Such a demand would have been reasonable if the debt wasn’t disputed. From the audio, one can deduce that Tracy was going back on her understanding with Marshal. That was why the lawyer told her not to call him again after that day. We should be objective and fair minded. May we not help or fight for people who will embarrass or seek to destroy us.

As a lawyer, if you once complained about a bad principal at the start of your career, the least you can do is not become that kind of boss. Make life easier for others. Don’t be toxic. That you suffer doesn’t mean others must suffer. Treat your juniors well and be a good boss.🤍
