Four fun days at @NBASummerLeague. Pulling for so many of these young guys because it’s their lifelong dream. But word of caution. It’s akin to MLB Double A All-Star game. Some very good prospects and some sleepers but you can’t overreact to a 20 point performance. Also, teams are experimenting with their top picks. Can a big wing be a playmaker? Can an inside player in college shoot the three?

A large part of what allowed the Suns to pull away late against the Trailblazers was their reliance + efficiency using Step-Up ball screens. Most of these clips are all from the 4th quarter. Think you’ll start to see a lot more teams relying on these types of ball screens (not that it’s not already a staple in every team’s playbook at all levels). But I found it interesting how basically all of Phoenix’s ball screens were set away from the middle of the floor. Harder to pressure/trap, ability to still get to the middle of the floor by snaking against drop or rejecting the screen, can use it to initiate a layered action to the opposite side of the floor, and put short roll playmakers in a better position. The Suns capitalized on all of these options which helped them pull away.
