A great emotional open on NBC before its coverage of the U.S. Open begins, with Payne Stewart’s son, Aaron, reflecting on his father’s legacy 25 years after his 1999 U.S. Open win:

Confident Teams Have Confident Teammates. Team Leaders... How do you develop confidence in your teammates? Here are 9 ways... 1: Celebrate Successes There is nothing more powerful than a teammate recognizing their teammate's success. This builds trust and confidence in the team. Leaders know this and do this. Celebrate successes. Be a leader. 2: Promote a Growth Mindset There is always room to grow. The process is greater than the prize. There is always room for improvement. Promote this mindset with your teammates. Work to play your best at the end of your season. 3: Focus on Strengths Be great at what you are good at - this is a great mantra to live by as an athlete. Know your role and excel at it. Play within yourself. Don’t try to do too much. Make fewer mistakes. Develop confidence. 4: Support Their Weaknesses We all have weaknesses. Help guide and coach them as leaders. Tell them to focus on strengths during the in-season and weaknesses in the off-season. Don’t let your teammates focus on what they cannot do; have them focus on what they can do. 5: Praise in Public If you are a team leader and get a chance to talk to the media, always praise your teammates in public. This grows the individual and grows the team. 6: Pre and Post Practice Work with your teammates before or after practice. Encourage them to get there early or stay late. Commit to their improvement. Be a servant leader. Know that when you help them, you help the team. 7: Promote Past Successes If a player lacks confidence, help remind them of past successes. Bring up their stats, old game videos, or past game experiences. These help build confidence and remind them what is possible. 8: Help them Visualize Visualization is one the the best mind strategies for sports. Build confidence by visualizing yourself in competition beforehand. Prepare the mind for the journey ahead. This builds confidence in what you are able to do. 9: Show Trust Trust is earned. Show your teammates you trust them. Trust builds confidence. _____ Follow me @gregberge for more Actionable Ideas on Coaching, Leadership, Culture, and Teams.
