"Jesus, Paul, look at this receipt—ten dollars for a single potato. This new Value-Mart AI surge pricing is killing me, man. Killing me."
“That’s nothing, Bill. Wait ’til the next update: the store will be able to see exactly how much money you have in your bank.”
“You’re kidding.”
“And your 401k.”
“@#$% me sideways.”
“That’s why I use URCHN to do my groceries.”
“Really? What’s URCHN?”
“URCHN is the latest in affordable concierge shopping.”
“Oh, you mean like Uber or Instacart. What makes them different?”
“Orphans.”
“𝑂𝑟𝑝ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑠?”
“That’s right, Bill. And not just any orphans. Dirty, starving orphans who live under overpasses.”
“Uuuh.”
“As you know, the cameras in the grocery aisle scan your face and adjust the price based on race, socioeconomic status, and dietary restrictions. But you know who always gets the best prices, no matter what?”
“…orphans?”
“Yep.”
“I don’t know, Paul, that seems a little-”
“Of course, the AI still discriminates based on race, which is why they send a multi-racial team of no less than four dirty orphans to buy your groceries.”
"Um."
“The Latino child buys your rice, and the Asian child buys your tortillas.”
“Yeah, no, I get it.”
“And the black child-”
“Sorry, uh, these are children, right? Small children?”
“Of course. Teens would raise the price.”
“How do they, uh, reach the items on the top shelves?”
“They stand on each other’s emaciated little shoulders.”
"Jesus."
"Yeah, the Hispanic orphan tends to be on the bottom."
"What?"
"Sturdy stock."
“…and how much do you save?”
“My last potato was 34 cents.”
“#$&@ it, I’m in.”

Walmart is rolling out digital price tags at all of its stores. At the same time, the corporate giant just secured a patent for "dynamically and automatically updating item prices.” Plus another patent for using machine learning to predict demand and recommend prices.

Finished Slay the Princess - I'd seen it streamed a bit so from that I already knew I'd like it, but it was very solid indeed, one of the best examples of unique English language VNs I can think of, and its success entirely deserved.
Wonderful narrator.

Karp’s exact words from CNBC: his technology disrupts largely Democratic, humanities-trained voters and makes their economic power less while increasing the economic power of vocationally trained, working-class, often male voters.
He said it. On camera. While running a firm with massive federal contracts embedded in the Pentagon and now actively involved in the Iran war.
The republic has faced gilded-age barons and Cold War propagandists before. Our answer was always recommitting to open institutions that serve all citizens instead of letting private power quietly rewrite the rules of who gets to matter. That commitment is being tested again right now.

His message is loud and clear: My technology will take political capital away from one of your greatest enemies—liberal women with degrees—and give one of your favorite demographics to patronize—working class men—more political power to transfer to you. trib.al/N2l8EDM

There is no theory about the problem of ocean acidification. It is called the evil twin of climate change, evil because the consequences will be far more serious.
We passed the ocean pH tipping point 5 years ago; in 15 years we will reach the end point and lose most of the fish, whales, seals, birds and food supply for 3 billion people. In addition, the primary mechanism that regulates the climate and life support system for the planet will be destroyed.
The above series of events are also stated by the IPCC with a very high degree of confidence (100%), its going to happen, yet it is almost completely ignored. Via Howard Dryden
