The German word for Enlightenment, Aufklärung, implies that we are letting our children know all the dirty secrets of human nature. The current education system of the US does not believe in this kind of enlightenment, and propagates a religiously normative idea of who we are.

@JonTeets005 Non-believers generally don't understand that to the faithful, God is not a propositional belief but an existential condition that is as observable as one's own personal self.

Most atheists are just protestants who protest more.
