No matter how good a coach you are, there will always be people, parents, former players who have issues with you.
I know I’ve been a positive force everywhere I’ve coached. I’ve given my all to every program and every kid. I haven’t been perfect, but I have been consistent and successful.
I’ve learned that people with a losing mentality will always find something to complain about. Even when they finally get to play for a winning program, receive quality instruction, or get exposure to colleges, some will still say, “I hate that guy, he yelled at me.”
But the reality is, “I hate that guy, he held me accountable.”
Some people just don’t want to be held to a standard; they want to do whatever they want.
It’s tough, because sometimes you coach a group with several of these individuals (I know this far too well) But the key is to continue doing things the right way. People might try to attack your character, but as long as you do the right thing, keep your values and stick to being consistent, their words won’t stick.
It will just be another very sad person living in a delusional world. You can’t help those people until they actually look in the mirror… hopefully then your lessons as a coach seep in.
