The Pythagorean Theorem Predates Pythagoras ✍️ While Pythagoras is credited with the theorem, evidence from a Babylonian clay tablet suggests that this mathematical principle was understood over a thousand years before Pythagoras. This indicates that ancient civilizations had a grasp of geometric principles long before they were formalized by Greek mathematicians.

The photoelectric effect is a phenomenon in which electrons are ejected from a material-typically a metal-when it is exposed to light of a certain frequency. Albert Einstein explained it in 1905 by proposing that light behaves as discrete packets of energy called photons. If the photon’s energy is greater than the material’s work function (the energy needed to release an electron), the electron is emitted. What's a scientific mystery you believe could be solved in your lifetime?✍️

Carl Sagan on Big Bang ✍️ Ten or twenty billion years ago, something happened-the Big Bang, the event that began our universe. Why it happened is the greatest mystery. That it happened is reasonably clear. All the matter in the universe was concentrated at extremely high density-a kind of cosmic egg, reminiscent of the creation myths of many cultures-perhaps into a mathematical point with no dimensions at all.

The Feynman point is the name given to the position in the decimal expansion of π where a sequence of six consecutive nines first appears. It is named after the physicist Richard Feynman, who allegedly joked that he would like to memorize the digits of pi up to that point and then say “and so on” as if π. were rational. The Feynman point occurs at the 762nd digit after the decimal point, which is much earlier than expected by chance.

Leonard Susskind on Einstein and Quantum mechanics ✍️ Albert Einstein, who was in many ways the father of quantum mechanics, had a notorious love-hate relation with the subject. His debates with Niels Bohr—Bohr completely accepting of quantum mechanics and Einstein deeply skeptical— are famous in the history of science. It was generally accepted by most physicists that Bohr won and Einstein lost. My own feeling, I think shared by a growing number of physicists, is that this attitude does not do justice to Einstein’s views. Both Bohr and Einstein were subtle men. Einstein tried very hard to show that quantum mechanics was inconsistent; Bohr, however, was always able to counter his arguments. But in his final attack Einstein pointed to something so deep, so counterintuitive, so troubling, and yet so exciting, that at the beginning of the twenty-first century it has returned to fascinate theoretical physicists. Bohr’s only answer to Einstein’s last great discovery—the discovery of entanglement—was to ignore it.
