Speculators are already selling, but the speculative node operators are also massively suppressing the mining rate. Pi has to become cheap enough that running a node purely for profit is no longer cost-effective. As those operators leave, the mining rate should rise for those who remain for the ecosystem. A price of $0.01 does not matter much if you are mining 10 or 100 times as much Pi. The free market balances the price of Pi against the cost of earning it.

@pitown89 @PiCoreTeam @nkokkalis If supply and demand are not working and the price keeps falling, burning tokens can help the project survive. A network cannot have real utility if its token economy is falling apart.

SDF planned to distribute 2billion tokens through keybase but had to cancel the promotion when it got overwhelmed by bots thus proving there needs to be a more sophisticated system in order to give tokens away for free. Since the burn happened literally in the same timeframe as the promotion it's likely that burn was influenced by the failure of the giveaway which was part of the stellar world giveaway program, the original plan. Pi has a sophisticated system to distribute tokens so there's no reason to cancel their original plan to distribute 65% to users.
