@aryflamingo @wwxwashere Never found a beta reader I could stand myself. If I wanted to write in collaboration, I'd write plays, not prose. Just me and the blank page against the world. We seem to have quite different views on art itself, tbh, that are quite alien to each other.

“why are people so unwilling to learn proper english?” and other issues summarized. i don’t think anyone has a problem with good faith advice given freely. i don’t at least and i think someone got caught in crossfire unnecessarily. the reason people are so passionate about this subject is simple: fic writers face constant uncalled for criticism, arrogant subtweets and other forms of hostility. this is so constant and so filled with “learn proper english” colonialism-filled sentiment that it gets tiring, but also puts people in a defensive state. that is why people might get unwarranted reactions like whoever did a genuine and well intentioned post a while ago. it’s not their fault but of the context of antagonism they’re in, which makes people frankly over sensitive (that post in my opinion had nothing wrong with it). that being said, i do want to talk about two things: 1) not everyone wants “proper english” or to be a “good writer” on ao3, and that’s ok. i understand that to a perfectionist mind that might sound ludicrous, but a hobby should not be subject to a standard of excellence. people might be happy with completely crappy english and bad grammar. they are allowed to engage with language in whatever way they want, and finding your way superior is silly at best. at the end of the day it doesn’t really matter if your advice is good or if the writing is bad. people are doing it for fun. the pressure to be good should be kept away from hobbies unless the person who’s doing it specifically wants it. fic writing is a PASSION and sometimes part of it is that it’s allowed to be bad. unapologetically so. you’re allowed to play in a little sandbox away from the idea of performing well or optimally. none of this means people would reject feedback on academic or professional writing, or that we don’t want to learn. it means that regarding fanfiction specifically i think people are allowed not to care. which brings me to 2) “proper” language exists in different forms for different spaces if you are speaking to someone in an informal setting and they can understand you, then language has been used properly. that’s enough. if you are writing a tweet or a note to a friend and you write “suck deez ballz” and that delivered the message, then language had been used properly. the same way i am using no capital letters or proper grammar in this post, there are different settings for different language environments. academically, or professionally you should absolutely pertain to the rules of grammar, at least until it is an art expression (see: clarice lispector). ao3, though? it is a fanfiction website. people are there as a hobby. not only that, but a lot of writers are using it to practice their second or third or fourth language. they should be allowed to experiment with it and to learn at their own pace, WITHOUT the elitist and self entitled input of a stranger who believes they know best. even if say the author wanted to learn, they are allowed to learn however they please, and that includes writing a million words of bad grammar until they get it right. they are allowed to never learn, or make weird stylistic choices. any good artist or teacher will tell you mistakes are a fundamental part of learning, and by bringing hostility into a space that should be safe and welcoming, you are actually PREVENTING people from doing what you are claiming to help with.
