After a cold weather delay dust is flying again in the SW.

@derekmcbain @kowalchukfarms1 I’m really considering the cultivator in certain areas. I don’t think the durum would have a chance in this part of the field.

Controversial take of the day: Every spring is different! Things like soil temp, air temperature and moisture do not know what day it is So picking a start date for seeding solely based on the calendar makes very little sense…

@CRToney2 @pat_kunz @swskfarm Chuck is right, there is talk of guys renegotiating 35-40$ or just dropping land completely, even at that price I wouldn’t add more acres right now, we are in the red this year and looking like we will be again next year.

@pat_kunz @swskfarm The prices smell poorly, we still have a drought, costs are high, my bank account is empty

Some land up for rent in our area via a rent auction. Watching this with interest, as I hear a lot about some current cash rents are unsustainable. I would agree.

@tpotwilson It’s scary around here, only had 4-5” in that rainy spell, everything greened up so it’s probably mostly gone, earlier seeded crops barely made double digits, no signs of relief. Starting to wonder if we are going to make it through.

Some of you thaught 25’ is gonna be a lean year with tight margins. Wait till drought 26’ hits the triangle and crop ins coverage is the worst we’ve seen in a decade That’s gonna be fun! #palliserproblems

@fredweisg Here too. Not bad though our melons in the garden survived.

@fredweisg @SpecialtySeeds I’ve got kochia migrating out of saline spots that appear resistant to everything. Fierce didn’t get them, 40ac rate of heat/glyphosate didn’t touch them, some won’t even wilt with reglone. I’m planning on hitting them with steel and taking those areas out of production.

@SpecialtySeeds See a few of those trails in authority sprayed fields, in our durum with group 14 sprayed three weeks back, seams nothing can touch them but a shovel

Classic example of how kochia with a new herbicide resistance invades your field.

#lentils #drought25 #mildew if anyone was wondering about lentil quality, this was Thursday , now we have had another two rains on this crop. Hard to avoid all the gopher and badger mounds. To the guy that said just don’t combine the rocks it’s easy.

@Plantmore1 @rgstone1 @scottyheps After last night we are closing in on 8 inch’s in August. It’s definitely flooding in that area now. I have 3 quarter of lentils smack dab in the middle.

FD250 headers, do they work as good as older models cutting lentils in mud? Tighten adapter springs and go? Curious if the heavier 50’ work like the older 40’ ?

@Plantmore1 @MoneoDallas Pretty easy to find sprouted in my early durum, hard in my later stuff. I don’t think the problem will be widespread. Lots of midge, smudge, mildew etc, might be the bigger issue.

@MoneoDallas Haven’t seen sprouted durum but heard of it. See moldy kernels in this area. Have seen sprouted peas on X in your and my area. A mess is brewing.

Quality will be a big issue now. Wowzer.
Brent@Plantmore1

@rgstone1 @scottyheps We are 2” this weekend and counting. Probably 4ish since August 1. And rained quit a bit in July. Crop quality being hurt drastically now. Moldy durum kernels, sprouting in many crops I’m guessing now. And fight to get lentils off the ground. Totally different mindset than June15

@spiga_dorata @farmerjim79 Boy, hopefully no snowstorms in September around here. Barley regrowth no problem, durum wouldn’t surprise me if it added some frost to the grain sample.

@PickMeProduce @farmerjim79 I suspected this...but...low yield potential aside...the point is...will this late regrowth of this plants be able to complete their cycle and be harvested before the frost and snowstorms arrive in September?

Ok, that's not durum...but the unstunning unbeliavable year ongoing in the Southwest Saskatchewan explained easily in only 3 photos 👇 #drought25 #Canada #nodroughtanymore #durum Wondering how all this regrowth and "fake" green fields will be read by the satellite model yield of Statistic Canada... 😎
Moneo@MoneoDallas

These photos were taken end of May, end of June, end of July. Same spot. Burnt out spots are greening up and tossing heads. Unreal.

@RobWarkentin I had lentils on virgin land next to land that has had lentils a number of times, seeded the same, both durum last year, the difference in look was almost the same as this picture.

The chickpeas on the left are on virgin chickpea ground. The ones on the right had chickpeas planted there in 2020. Interesting to see the difference the background rhizobia levels can make.
