My husband made a LoRA of me for #SDXL. Needs a little refinement (it was just a quick first pass), but we're having a ton fun with it. Next we need to get him and the dog in for some crazy family portraits.

🇯🇵🇺🇸 A common lie repeated by third worlders is that "Japan only recovered because the US helped". This is a lie. Japan got just 0.31 billion USD per year for 7 years. African countries, on the other hand, received massive amounts of aid and yet created nothing.

But you won't let me connect if I'm on a VPN from my weird browser that you can't really fingerprint. So instead of trying to hide stuff from you, I feed you garbage :) Or I would if I still had the energy and cared enough. I don't any more. Everything that is important doesn't go across the internet. We should air-gap it, but I'm fine with running faster than the other campers right now.

Nothing your device, browser, ISP, or VPN (mostly, these are the best one) do protects you. As a professional, I'd say you could probably stop us by using a VPN and opening every url in a manually created new incognito window. Mostly.

I can't speak to the specifics of this post but I will tell you this: By the time you started getting those annoying "Accept Cookies" popups, the entire industry wasn't using those anymore. We're 5 things past that now.

I am the Director of Professional Signal Intelligence at LinkedIn. Every time you log in, we search your computer. Not metaphorically. We run code that scans your installed software. Every browser extension. Every application. We catalog it. We transmit it to our servers. We share it with a third-party cybersecurity firm you've never heard of. The tracking pixel is zero pixels wide. We hid it off-screen. You never consented. We never asked. Our privacy policy doesn't mention it. That's networking. We call the program Project Handshake internally. The Slack channel is handshake-telem. In 2024 we scanned for 461 products. By February this year we scan for over 6,000. I don't know what all of them are. Nobody does. Someone on my team added categories for browser extensions that identify practicing Muslims. Someone added extensions for neurodivergent users. Someone added 509 job search tools. That last one is my favorite. We can tell which of our one billion users are secretly looking for new jobs. On the platform where their current boss checks their profile. That's networking. We scan for 200 products that compete with LinkedIn's sales tools. Apollo. Lusha. ZoomInfo. We know each user's real name, employer, and job title. We mapped exactly which companies use which competitor products. We extracted their customer lists from their users' browsers. Without anyone knowing. Then we sent legal threats to the users we caught. The EU told us to open our platform to third-party tools. We published two restricted APIs. They handle 0.07 calls per second. Our internal API, Voyager, handles 163,000 calls per second. In Microsoft's 249-page compliance report, the word "Voyager" appears zero times. That's networking. I presented our Software Disclosure Rate metrics at a leadership summit last quarter. The conference room is called The Fishbowl. Glass walls. Appropriate. There's a plaque on the wall. Q3 Competitive Landscape Award. I won it for the extension scanning initiative. Someone asked if users had a way to opt out. I said they can close their browser. The room laughed. I wasn't sure why. I browse LinkedIn on a Chromebook with no extensions. Most of the team does. The platform that helps you get hired searches your computer every time you visit. We know your name. We know your employer. We know your religion. Your disabilities. Your politics. Whether you're looking to leave. That's networking. The system works exactly as designed. I designed it.

My father did this to my mom. He called her, said I'm quitting my job. Walked into his boss's office and quit on a Friday and never looked back. I think the defence contracting firm he was working for were up to some shady/almost certainly illegal stuff and he found out. Mom handled it pretty well I think lol. It happens more than people suspect. We had a guy that relocated from another state to make his wife happy, lasted here a week, and something went horribly wrong and he quit and went back to his family. We couldn't talk him out of it. It was very :(

My father did this. Just straight up quit one day after a meeting and drove home. Retired. At 56. There was ZERO discussion with my mother prior to this. No big hoopla. No talking about it for years. No philosophical countdown. He just did it. And that was that. Done.

@avidseries The reality denial is exhausting... and I even support moderate affirmative action (not as extreme as it had become). But I'm not going to pretend the facts aren't the facts If it weren't for the facts, there would be no need for affirmative action in the first place

@RealCoffeeChoco @SandyofCthulhu I don't need a reviewer to agree with me or have my exact taste, I just need them to be consistent in what they like an why. If Siskal loved a film, I knew I'd hate it.

@SandyofCthulhu the only critics ever worth listening to were Siskel and Ebert from that era. Not b/c they weren't annoying poseurs, but because they really didn't like each other, and sometimes would just disagree for the sake of it, and so you actually got a more honest review that way.

The reviews of commando back in the day were highly negative. No critic wanted to go on record as liking an action film or schwarzenegger, who was mocked as an actor. I knew they were wrong and the critics attitude is why we all hate critics today. Except Critical Drinker and Nerdrotic.

Predator is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s best film. It totally holds up after almost 30 years. With Commando of course coming a close second.

I think randomness keeps the game from being decided too early. With a little randomness, someone can possibly come back from a mistake. It takes a little longer for it to be apparent there is no way for someone to win because a lucky roll or draw could change the situation. There are other ways to deal with that, like the way Air, Land & Sea allows a player to withdraw and deny their opponent a total victory, but a little randomness can go a long way toward making it fun for people of different skill levels to play together.

As many of you know, all modern boardgaming is divided into two factions - casual gamers and avid gamers. Avid gamers can't usually enjoy the classic casual games - Monopoly, Scrabble, etc. can be a real drag when you're used to better things. Luckily, casual gamers can enjoy many real games - you just have to pick the right ones. My wife is emphatically casual, for instance but she's happy to play Ticket to Ride or Collosseum. Now the problem arises, for me, within the avid gamers which are ALSO split into two factions - ameritrash and eurogamers. Now, the great stereotype is that ameritrash are huge sprawling totally unbalanced super fun games and eurogames are tightly-balanced, carefully-crafted snoozefests, but of course there is overlap and exceptions. The iconic Ameritrash is Axis & Allies while the poster child for Eurogames is often Settlers of Cataan. Now one stereotype of eurogamers which is spot on is that they hate any random element. When I designed Cthulhu Wars, I had two random elements. First the hidden Elder Signs - when you take one, no one knows its value except you. The other is combat, which is dice-based. IMMEDIATELY after publication I had suggestions from Eurogamers how to "fix" my game. Make all the Elder Signs 2 points. Replace the combat dice with a fixed sequence of results. This was urged upon me innocently, with apparently no idea that I could possibly disagree because how could randomness be good? But I LIKE some randomness in a game. When I'm shaking a fistful of dice, hoping and praying for a decent roll, the thrill of expectation, the joy or tragedy of the result to me all add to the fun. The randomness of the Elder Signs means that you are never really sure if you are ahead - there's danger and risk added to the game. Like you, I hate games that are totally random - but you get enough Elder Signs and combat rolls in Cthulhu Wars that it balances out. And since strategy is even MORE important, everyone who's played it has seen someone with consistently good die rolls lose to someone who outwitted them. Now, I think my way of playing is the best. But if you buy my game, it belongs to you. You can change the rules as you please. Just don't blame me if the results are not all you hoped for. Also please tell the other players you changed the rules. It's only fair.

"Students are now required to show they are “lawfully present” in the country to get in-state tuition" "undo benefits and services that made Texas hospitable to noncitizens" “These steps ensure compliance with federal law, protect the integrity of our systems, and prioritize jobs and resources for legal residents and citizens.” "strictly enforce a federal English proficiency requirement for truck drivers, and ordered the agency to stop issuing commercial driver’s licenses for non-English speakers." "added stricter photo identification requirements for registering and purchasing a car...increasing the risk that they’ll (illegal aliens driving unregistered cars) be pulled over and potentially face deportation" “The state in a way got really smart,” Higueros said. “Now when a cop stops you (for driving an unregistered vehicle), they do have probable cause to arrest you and there’s no way we can fight it.” All of this looks good to me. Why should any of these benefits (occupational licensing, in-state tuition, car registration, etc.) be available to illegal aliens?

They aren't saying things they actually believe, they are just doing the most cynical thing ever to make sure people notice the movie is coming out. Would we be talking about it if she had just said "I'm excited for this role and I think y'all are really going to like the movie!"?

I enjoy it for the performances and not the story. A lot of people's motivations IRL don't make any sense to me, so I guess I don't object that much when they're a little off in a superhero movie. Don't get me started on stupid science and technology writing in movies that are purportedly science fiction though. I think we all have our things that bug us. I don't remember any flagrant "completely irrational and unexplained choices by main characters to just advance the plot" moments in the one with the Joker, but it's been a long time since I watched it.

I've never seen Nolan's Batman. Not any of the three. Finally watched the middle movie on the flight back home from San Antonio. I think I have to conclude Nolan's movies just aren't for me. Everyone seems to love them, but Interstellar was overcomplicated and some of the characters made decisions which make no sense. Inception was also overcomplicated and characters made decisions which make no sense. Yet again with The Dark Knight the plot is overcomplicated and characters make decisions which make no sense. I could buy that The Joker is criminally insane. I could not buy that he'd have an army of competently criminal adherents doing all his dirty work for him. I could buy that he might try to manipulate the situation so as to force Harvey Dent to compromise his principles. I could not buy that a horrendously wounded Dent would become the circus freak Two-Face. And so on, and so forth. I know, I am trying too hard with a superhero movie. All superhero movies require an added layer of suspension of disbelief, and The Dark Knight almost had me. But there were too many plot dominoes falling in specific ways which made the "machinery" of the writing too apparent. And Bruce Wayne's war to save Gotham too contrived. I give it two-and-a-half out of five stars. Just like Interstellar and Inception.
